The infamous Talladega Superspeedway lived up to its expectations as multi-car wrecks gained momentum late in the GEICO 500. Speaking of wrecks, Legacy MC star Erik Jones suffered the most as he was subjected to a harrowing crash. Jones, piloting the No. 43 Toyota Camry, found himself in a precarious situation when an unfortunate incident preceded the third turn sending his car hurtling into the retaining wall. The impact brought an abrupt DNF to Jones at 154 laps, thus relegating him to a P35 finish.
But that is not all. The very resemblance of Jones’ crash with that of Dale Earnhardt’s in 2001 did not escape the fans’ eye as they came up with comparisons.
How did Erik Jones manage to escape the tragedy faced by Dale Earnhardt?

A misguided push during a routine pit stop strategy sent Erik Jones careening head-on into the inside wall, triggering a multi-car collision. This incident unfolded during the final stages of the race, specifically with 36 laps remaining. The sequence of events began as a group of Toyota drivers, including Jones, entered the pit lane for their final routine stop under green flag conditions. This was a part of their strategy. But as a result, Jones lost control and his vehicle struck the inside wall at a dangerous angle. This alone set off a chain reaction involving multiple drivers. Each car in this sequence experienced varying degrees of damage, with Erik Jones being admitted to the hospital.
In 2001, a similar tragic crash on claimed the life of Dale Earnhardt at Daytona. While driving his renowned black No. 3 Chevrolet, he made contact with another vehicle and subsequently hit the wall. Rescuers extricated him from the wreckage, and he was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to head injuries. Over 17 million live TV viewers witnessed the incident, which led to significant changes in NASCAR. The organization introduced more stringent safety measures, such as head-and-neck restraints, and safer barriers at tracks, among other things. Since that fateful day, no driver has lost their life in a NASCAR race across the top three series.
However, the debacle with Jones was enough to send fans a trip down memory lane as they related Jones’ angle in hitting the wall with that of Dale Sr. They somehow got a glimpse of the Daytona race of February 2001 through this and took to social media to talk about the same.
Cheers to the Life and Legacy of Dale Sr!
After Jones’ wreckage, fans were pretty disturbed and wanted more information on him. At the same time, they lauded NASCAR for their safety protocols, which prevented Jones from suffering a greater impact.
Athetic Auto writer Jeff Gluck wrote, “The fact Erik Jones can stand there and do an interview moments after *THAT* really shows you the state of safety today. Unbelievable. Phew.”

On the other hand, fans brought out the Dale Sr comparison with one saying how the crash looked exactly like the Intimidator’s.
That angle looked exactly like Earnhardt in 2001.

Another fan explained how 30 years after Dale Sr’s incident, the safety is the main USP of NASCAR nowadays. The safety barriers, and the safer cars are responsible for this, they believe.
30 years ago it’s a far different story. Thank goodness for the SAFER barriers and the cars being able to crumple like that.

It is evident that his legacy will never erase from the memories of ardent NASCAR fans and followers. “The Intimidator” effect is still as strong as it used to be, and it is expected to remain the same.
On the flip side, following this crash, NASCAR authorities are expected to have a closer look at the safety gears. Even though it is not official, it is expected that they are going to go through the entire process to see if any changes are required. Will they bring around any more changes?
