Owning a team with an array of wins and 5 Championships in the NASCAR Xfinity Series is quite befitting for two-time Xfinity Series champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. His team houses a battalion of talented drivers like Justin Allgaier, Brandon Jones, and Sam Mayer. A lot of anticipation regarding the future of Sam Mayer arose when he went for his first-ever career victory at Road America and then snatched the checkered flag at Watkins Glen the following month. It seemed like other than performing a burnout at the victory lane, there was nothing that this young driver could not achieve.

However, come Texas Motor Speedway; the hopes for his playoff contention dimmed as he fell right to the back of the pack and NASCAR slammed him with a DNF. Meanwhile, even the fans who cheered for him after his victories did not let go of the chance to slam him on social media.

Despite starting the season with two dominant victories, Sam Mayer’s playoff run was over right in the opening lap of Andy’s Frozen Custard 300, when he got loose around a corner and dashed against the outside wall, damaging his #1 Chevrolet Camaro. As a result, the 20-year-old finished last in the race.

No sooner had the official page of Xfinity Series tweeted, “We’re underway at
@TXMotorSpeedway, but there’s trouble early for @sam_mayer_!#NASCARPlayoffs”, that the fans, or should we say, haters, started showering mean comments at the Wisconsin native.

Someone said, “Lol@sam_mayer_you douche you gonna blame @joshberry again this week for wrecking yourself in the first corner of the race because you are a talentless hack. Love@JRMotorsports except for you, you spoiled entitled little punk”

While another wrote, “Sam Mayer and Riley Herbst both tearing the wall down in the first 2 laps is about right ?”

“Sam Mayer really got what he deserved today after the way he talked about his teammate last week. #NASCAR #XfinitySeries”, said another.

As the round of 8, inches closer, the drivers are definitely feeling the heat. Sam Mayer was no exception. But alas, despite starting the race ranked 10th in the points standings and a mere 14-point deficit from the cutline, his disappointing Texas outing left him in a must-win situation moving into the next playoff race at Charlotte Roval.

Alternatively, he has to frog-jump four other drivers ahead of him on points. Sitting in rank 12, he shoulders a minus 34 beneath the cutline.

According to Autoweek.com, Sam Mayer said in a post-race interview, “We?re going to have to make something happen…our backs are up against the wall.”
