Did NASCAR make a mistake by moving the Championship race away from Homestead-Miami in the first place?

Well, NASCAR survives on the nostalgia of racing fans. Since 1949, gearheads have flocked the grandstands of every racetrack, cheering for their favorite racers. Their experience has largely been dictated by track conditions. Homestead-Miami Speedway is one track that stands tall in popularity since its first Cup race in 1999. It held the Championship race since 2004 but lost that privilege in 2019. However, fans’ soaring emotions may be motivating NASCAR to take it back.

Since 2019, Cup Series drivers have battled for the Bill France Cup at Phoenix Raceway. Its wildcard reputation has rarely been in the fans’ good books. People have clamored for a comeback to Homestead, and that outcry notched up after the thrilling playoff race. Finally, winds of change seem to be set in motion.

The Cup Series schedule for next year surprised people in August already. Among a series of race shuffles, one sparkling addition stood out – NASCAR will race in Mexico City in place of one of Richmond’s races. Despite spreading its wings internationally, fans root for the oldies to be rejuvenated for fresh bouts of racing. Bowman Gray Stadium will be revived for The Clash race in February, while Rockingham will feature in the Craftsman Truck Series. Similarly, NASCAR may finally reverse a decision they made five years back.

The recently concluded Straight Talk Wireless 400 race was a thriller. Tyler Reddick made a last-lap pass of Ryan Blaney and Denny Hamlin to win, enthralling fans. They renewed their clamor for Homestead-Miami Speedway to resume hosting the Championship 4 race.

The outcry must have been particularly loud, as rumors of NASCAR shifting its feet are already here. An Instagram fan page dropped this bomb: “Homestead-Miami Speedway is working on bringing the championship weekend back to south Florida in 2026, per a report today from Bob Pockrass. The race moving up for 2025 allows the city and track way more than enough time to make any necessary renovations.”

This should be music to diehard racing fans who watched veterans trade paint in Homestead. The first time it conducted the final Chase race in 2004, Kurt Busch overcame a damaged right front wheel and close scrapes with the outside wall to win the Championship, although Greg Biffle won the race. Similarly, Tony Stewart edged a hard-charging Carl Edwards for the 2011 title. This year’s showdown saw even Blaney tipping his hat to Reddick: “Man, I thought I got into [Turn] 3 hard, and the 45 [Reddick] just blitzed up in there, and it stuck for him, which is very impressive.”

Since 1999, Homestead-Miami has seen only the cream of the race field achieve victory. All of its victors had at least 19 wins on their resume – except for William Byron, Christopher Bell, and now Tyler Reddick. Witnessing these star-studded drivers race each other hard is all that fans ask for. So as soon as the NASCAR schedule rumor dropped, fans gave it their seal of approval. Somebody manifested the Homestead-Miami swap: “It better be. The race today proves that it deserves the championship race. Maybe even two dates.” Another fan added a dose of drama, crossing their fingers. “Please if there is a god make this happen.” Someone scoffed at NASCAR’s decision to shift the Championship 4 venue in the first place. “Should NEVER have left.”

Yet a few words in the update concerned fans. NASCAR and Speedway Motorsports Inc. have frequently received flak for inadequately revamped racetracks. Remember Denny Hamlin’s online slugfest with SMI CEO Marcus Smith? The issue was the repaved Sonoma Raceway, which featured certain sections slowly peeling off. So one fan commented on the ‘necessary renovations’ mentioned. “What do they mean by “necessary renovations”. Are they gonna repave :(” But repave or not, people just want to see Homestead conducting the Cup drivers’ final battle. “We need homestead Miami championship race for 2026 please!”

Evidently, team NASCAR is throwing its weight behind a possible Homestead resumption. As the rumors circulate, let us wait and see if they materialize or not.
