NASCAR's heartwarming tribute at North Wilkesboro—does this redefine community support in sports?

The NASCAR community has come together to support survivors of Hurricane Helene, setting aside competition to aid those in need. With parts of western North Carolina devastated by the storm, teams like Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports are leading the charge, delivering supplies via haulers and helicopters. Drivers, too, have jumped in to help, showing the sport’s heart extends far beyond the racetrack during this time of crisis.

Seeing the NASCAR world work together to deliver essential aid to affected areas has brought about emotional reactions from fans. Many took to social media to express their gratitude for the collaborative movement, which will go a long way in providing some much-needed relief to the victims.

Ever since Hurricane Helene landed in Florida, the Category 4 storm has left havoc in its wake. Entire communities have been displaced, with hundreds missing, and over 200 casualties have already been recorded. Parts of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee have had to deal with record flooding, affecting roadways in the mountainous region.

As a result, delivering supplies to many affected individuals affected by the tragedy has been challenging, forcing big teams such as HMS and Joe Gibbs Racing to use their helicopters to assist the survivors. And they’re not alone.

  • Veteran racing drivers such as Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards are also using aviation resources to deliver supplies, and NASCAR tracks are doing their bit as well.
  • North Wilkesboro Speedway has postponed the upcoming Whelen Modified race as the track will serve as a collection area for donations for the hurricane survivors.
  • Charlotte and Bristol Motor Speedway have also joined in the effort, opening their campgrounds to provide refuge to those fleeing from the storm.
  • 23XI Racing; Denny Hamlin and MJ’s team is also playing its part and has donated $1 million to the NC Disaster Relief Fund and Second Harvest of Metrolina to help the Hurricane Helene survivors. Legendary NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan moved to North Carolina at the age of five, and the initiative is his way of giving back to the community he considers his own. Donations are also being accepted at the race shop ‘AirSpeed’ from October 1 and October 4, with items such as water, baby formula, first aid kits, feminine products, etc. being preferred.
  • The NASCAR community has rallied to support Hurricane Helene victims, with the Joey Logano Foundation donating $250,000 and the NASCAR Foundation contributing $150,000 to the American Red Cross.
  • Trackhouse Racing co-owner Justin Marks is also partnering with Aerial Recovery to assist Asheville residents. Fans have expressed their gratitude on social media for their generosity and efforts.
