Gone are the days when backmarker teams crowded the field in NASCAR races. Ever since the charters rolled out, the sanctioning body guaranteed a spot for the chartered teams. This trend ultimately saw backmarkers or smaller teams limited to superspeedway races like the Daytona 500 and Talladega events.
At the Daytona 500, NASCAR guarantees 36 spots for the chartered teams. This leaves the non-chartered outfits with only 4 spots, and only a few notable ones can secure those after the tough qualifying rounds and the Duels. In short, it’s hard to see a non-chartered team run a multiple-race schedule in the Gen-7 era. But Floyd Mayweather’s Team AmeriVet or Money Team Racing plans to change this dynamic. The team looks to compete in 15-17 Cup races in 2025.
Unlike other race teams, the MTR program revolves around helping 50 U.S. military veterans per week for 2025. ForgiveCO is partnering with the team on this venture and helping this project come to life. “This was a match made in heaven. We said, ‘If we can match the number of the car (No. 50) to the relief of who we’re going to be helping for the whole season, that could be something special.” Erik Antico, ForgiveCo’s Chief Revevue Officer, was quoted saying this on Yardbarker.

Moreover, the team’s co-owner Becky Auchmoody shed light on their ambitious plans for their busiest season ever, “running anywhere from 15-17 races.” However, the team is still on the search for more sponsors to help them mitigate the extensive cost of racing in the Cup Series. “In order to really get this program off the ground, we need to partner up with some sponsors and get to the track,” she added.
However, the fans weren’t convinced that Money Team Racing would be able to pull off this massive undertaking.
Can a non-charted team run multiple races in the Cup Series?
Ever since they entered into the Cup Series, MTR has made a total of seven appearances. The likes of Kaz Grala, Conor Daly, and Ty Dillon have piloted the team’s #50 entry since 2022. But this announcement sounded like a repeat of the script to this race fan. This isn’t the first time they planned on participating in multiple races. “Let’s see…In 2023, they said they’d run 4-7 races. They ran 2. In 2024, they said they’d run 5-8 and run full-time in 2025. They changed the team name and ran 1.”

MRT isn’t the only non-charter outfit trying to run multiple races in a NASCAR season. NY Racing has also been eyeing a maximum number of races. But, in order to compete, they have to clear the qualifying rounds, and that in itself is a task for these small teams. A Reddit user claimed that J.J. Yeley would run half the races for MRT and NY Racing in the best-case scenario. And that’s the only way he can see them running close to 15 races. “Lol watch yeley make it a full season running for them and ny. These 15-17 starts bank on if they make the 500 i think.”
Some even went as far as to predict that the team will only be able to show up at the Daytona and Atlanta races. Not only that, this race fan claimed that the team won’t be able to qualify for the season-opening Daytona 500 race. “Probably DNQ at Daytona, run Atlanta, then they’ll say they’re running Talladega, but by April they’re nowhere to be found on the entry list.”

Ty Dillon is certainly out of the picture to take command of the #50 Chevy for the next year. The driver has locked a full-time ride with Kaulig Racing in the #10 entry. So, Money Team Racing is not only short on sponsorship but also a talented driver, who can put their plan in motion on the racetrack. So who would potentially take over the #50 car next year? And going by the guess games on Reddit, J.J. Yeley seems to be leading right now. “So JJ Yeley will get Cup starts next year?”
This particular race fan connected the current charter dispute between 23XI Racing and NASCAR to this development. There is a possibility that NASCAR might take over the two teams’ charter, as they’ve stated they plan to run with 32 entries for next year. In that case, more backmarker teams could compete for multiple races. “Well, let’s all address the elephant. If NASCAR runs a 32-car charter, you suddenly have 8 open spots for taking on any given weekend.”
