Well, the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season has come to an end with Joey Logano adding his second Championship trophy to his shelf. However, the regular season champion, Chase Elliott had a pretty unfortunate run at Phoenix, finishing 30th after contact with the infamous watermelon farmer.
Fortunately, the bad luck concluded with him being named the Driver of The Year. But the fans didn’t get how the 2020 Cup Series Champion was picked over Logano.

We once again find a point where the NASCAR world is divided into two different perspectives with their opinions. Because a popular NASCAR fan page, conveniently named “Nascar Series Racing” revealed their pick for the driver of the year on their page. But the fans don’t seem to agree with it, because they think Logano should have taken the edge over him.
One fan questioned, as they clarified they’re not a fan of the Team Penske driver, “Why? Wouldn’t Logano be the driver of the year? He won it all, after all. (And I’m not a Logano fan).”
Plenty of fans were in agreement with them, “Pretty sure Joey Logano is the driver of the year with winning the championship!”, “Could of sworn Joey Logano won that. He got a big trophy and the title of Champion for it…”
There seems to have been a consensus among the fans about Logano having the title, since he won the championship. “Driver of the year ,hmm he got the Championship trophy ! Right ! And not one of his fans.”, “Really!he finished 4th in the points. #1 should be driver of the year.or joey.the champ.”
But should Elliott have won the title? Let’s look at his stats this season compared to Logano’s.
Does Chase Elliott deserve to win instead of Joey Logano?
Chase Elliott winning DOTY has sparked a lot of controversy among fans. Because many of them believe Logano should have won, as the Championship winner. But how do their stats compare?
Chase Elliott: Wins- 5, Top 5- 12, Top- 20
Joey Logano: Wins- 4, Top 5-11, Top- 17
The playoff system in NASCAR means the driver that finishes highest out of the final 4 in the last race wins, unlike Formula One where the driver with the most wins and points at the end of the season wins. And thanks to the Playoff system, Logano has added a second Championship under his belt.
However, stats suggest Elliott had the edge over the Team Penske driver, having the most wins out of any other driver. Moreover, he has also been one of the most consistent all season long. But NASCAR does indeed work on a playoff system and Logano in the rightful winner of the Drivers’ Playoffs and subsequently, the championship.
