Is Ty Dillon really the only thing keeping Corey LaJoie from being NASCAR's worst driver?

It’s fair to say that Ty Dillon isn’t the most popular NASCAR driver out there. With only one top-10 finish at Darlington Raceway, the 32-year-old has had a pretty underwhelming Truck Series season so far. Despite his performances, Dillon has received more than his fair share of opportunities, and he’s set to compete at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the Cup Series for Richard Childress Racing. Naturally, the decision has raised eyebrows from fans, many of whom believe that he doesn’t deserve the spot.

Causing the first caution of the truck race, Ty Dillon prompted reactions from fans on social media, who didn’t hesitate to make their voices heard about the Rackley WAR driver’s participation in the Cup Series at the Indianapolis Oval.

No, It Was a Disaster This Time

Ty Dillon made headlines once again. With the Craftsman Truck Series race underway at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, drama unfolded on Lap 44 after Dillon’s No. 25 Chevrolet Silverado spun in Turn 3. Having qualified in 20th place before the race, Ty Dillon had climbed up to 17th before his spin resulted in a caution. While he suffered no damage, the 32-year-old lost valuable track positions as a result.

The incident occurred at the same time Mason Massey blew his right side tire coming out of Turn 2, forcing him into the wall and causing visible damage to the right-front side of his No. 02 Chevrolet. As a result, Massey became the only driver who was forced to retire early, in what was his fourth DNF of the season. Currency ranked 23rd, the Youngs Motorsports driver has no poles or top 10 results in the 15 races he has competed in so far.

As for Ty Dillon, he will be competing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Cup Series. Richard Childress Racing will be fielding a third entry at Brickyard 400, after announcing its partnership with Titan Risk Solutions, whose sponsorship will feature on Dillon’s car. Ty Dillon has competed in 242 Cup Series races so far, with his best-ever finish coming in Talladega in 2021, where he finished third.

Despite his underwhelming performances across all three NASCAR national series, Ty Dillon has received plenty of opportunities time and again. With his latest being at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, one of NASCAR’s crown jewels, many fans have expressed their views that his spot should go to more deserving candidates. With just one top-10 finish in the Truck Series, Ty Dillon isn’t helping his case either, reinforcing nepotism accusations from fans.

It didn’t take long for fans to make themselves heard on social media after Ty Dillon brought about the first caution in the Truck Series race at Indianapolis. In an attempt to prove that Dillon isn’t fit to race in the Cup Series, one fan compared him to Corey LaJoie, who is currently 30th in the driver standings with three DNFs in 21 races. The fan wrote on X, “Ty Dillon is the only reason why Corey Lajoie isn’t the shittiest driver in NASCAR.”

Some fans expressed their disdain that Richard Childress Racing driver Austin Hill was more deserving of a spot in the Cup Series than Ty Dillon. Accusing Richard Childress of showing favoritism, especially considering Dillon’s season so far, one fan wrote, “Ty Dillon, what a talent. Just a single top 10 on the season. But don’t let that stop him from getting a Cup ride thanks to PopPop over Austin Hill.”

Echoing that sentiment, another fan claimed that Ty Dillon’s performances this season are making Austin Hill, who has won twice in 21 Xfinity Series races, look like a Hall of Fame driver. The fan wrote, “I swear ty makes Austin look like a HOFer.” Making fun of Rackley WAR’s decision to opt for Ty Dillon as their racing driver, a fan said, “Weekly reminder someone employs Ty Dillion to drive a racecar.”

Acknowledging Rackley WAR’s lack of ambition, a fan reflected on how a team that was once a championship contender is now competing for a mid-table finish, since Ty Dillon was appointed in December 2023. The fan wrote, “I can’t believe people are still defending Ty Dillion. What a massive fall off. The team went from round of 8 contenders to trying to stay in the top 20.”
