The 2023 regular season of the Cup Series finally closed its doors after an eventful race in Daytona. The drivers had braced themselves for a race marked with wrecks and cautions as they put their best foot forward. The final race of the regular season assuredly lived up to the expectations of the fans as well as the teams. However, it was not just the crashing hopes of playoffs of the drivers that drew the most attention but the declaration of a new champion.
The ongoing season has been one of the most unexpected seasons of NASCAR. With a new set of victors and the rise of the team’s underdog drivers, the 2023 season has been momentous, to say the least. Nonetheless, as the saying goes, “May the best one win” and it is Joe Gibbs Racing and its veteran driver that has lived up to the axiom. However, the victor was not easily crowned with the new title, without shooting a sly jab at JGR driver Denny Hamlin.

Once and for all, the new victor of the 2023 regular season has been settled and made official, and it is none other than the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran driver Martin Truex Jr. The 2017 Cup Series champion had exhibited an indomitable spirit in the ongoing season. Apart from clinching three victories in the season, Truex Jr. had collected an exponentially high number of stage points, after he outlasted his teammate Denny Hamlin, and also usurped William Byron from the championship-winning contention.
This championship comes as a respite to the #19 Toyota driver a year after being winless for a year and being shoved out of the playoffs. It was the first time that the driver missed the post-season since 2014. Nevertheless, the driver has portrayed a huge turnaround since then and finally was crowned the regular-season championship on the track of Daytona. The news was broke out to the NASCAR world by NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass. He wrote, “Truex is the regular season champion.”
Furthermore, this victory comes days after Martin Truex Jr. had extended his stay in NASCAR and Joe Gibbs Racing and decided to delay his retirement for another season. The victory does instill new hopes for the driver and his team as well as they pry for the season championship title later in the year. The Joe Gibbs Racing also posted on their official Twitter page, “It’s official! @MartinTruex_Jr wins the regular season championship giving him 15 playoff points!”

However, NASCAR enthusiasts seized the opportunity of Truex Jr’s victory to slam Denny Hamlin’s prioritizing his ownership over his team Joe Gibbs Racing, and abandoning his teammates.
Many wrote, “the hammering sound you hear is the nail in the final coffin for denny hamlin’s hopes at upsetting mtj.”
“Take that Hamlin for admitting wrecking Ross Chastain on Purpose LOL!!!!!”
