During the NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond, Kyle Busch was awarded a penalty for having a piece of tape stuck on his front grill. Fast forward a few weeks ahead, there emerged a photo of Hendrick Motorsports driver Chase Elliott having a piece of tape on his front grill.
But the only difference from Busch’s situation was that Elliott wasn’t penalized.

And that is because there were more differences in the two situations, the major one being that the piece of tape on Busch’s Toyota was illegally pasted on for performance advantage while Elliott’s Chevrolet probably picked up the ‘piece of tape’ from the track.
This was something NASCAR journalist Bob Pockrass also clarified.
“I know there have been questions about this piece of tape on Elliott grille. Checked in with someone from a non-Chevy organization and was told it looks like a piece of tape that came off the track (not placed by team) and if anything, it would make performance worse, not better,” Pockrass tweeted.

However, some NASCAR fans weren’t buying this explanation. Instead, they made some subtle and some not so subtle accusations of the decision makers once again favoring Hendrick Motorsports and NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver.
Wasn't Kyle Busch forced to pit by nascar in a previous race to remove tape? Oh wait..this was Chase Hendrick….

Hey Bob who cares if it makes the performance worse, rules are rules, or is that just for everyone but Hendrick drivers.

We get it. He’s the golden child and they are not allowed to negatively influence his race without hearing from his lawyers.

“I want to win just as bad at Daytona at the start of the season, when no one has any [winner] stickers on their cars, just as bad as I do when we get to Phoenix at the end of the season, regardless of what has gone on,” Elliott said.
The 2020 Cup Series champion emphasized that his drive is to “drive to win”, to do his job to the best of his abilities. It doesn’t matter whether his team is struggling or doing good, whether his teammates have won or they haven’t, all Chase Elliott wants to do ever is win.
