NASCAR fans are expected to be in for a treat with the action-packed two days of stock car racing at L.A. Memorial Coliseum for the Busch Light Clash. The season opener provides the fans with the first glimpse of their favorite star drivers before they get into the thick of the action for a long season. However, the weather updates by NWS indicate that the two-day event starting on Saturday could be in deep waters.
There has been a prediction of heavy rains on both race days. The practice session is set for today, followed by the main event tomorrow. Interestingly, the fans will also see a feature of the Mexican NASCAR exhibition race. But all these events are now under serious doubt. However, in the event that the rain does play spoilsport, NASCAR will have to look towards the contingency plans that are dependent on some vital factors.

With the weather showing no signs of mercy, NASCAR might have to take a tough call on rescheduling the season opener at L.A. Memorial Coliseum. It’s not just any passing by rain or scattered showers but there have been storm updates which are also followed by flooding. While there is still hope for tomorrow’s event to go as planned, with the current state of things, it is likely to be pushed ahead.
Keeping a tab on the development, NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass, via X, shared the whole schedule for the practice day as well as the main event on Sunday. He then followed it up with a list of factors that NASCAR will have to oversee to extend their stay in case of heavy rains and storms for the Clash at Coliseum. He mentioned that in a scenario where if the race does start, and the teams have rain tires but are without wipers, this could be a major hindrance for the drivers.
Moreover, if the race is delayed and expected to be rescheduled for the next week, NASCAR will have to take into account the flooding aspect and public safety. Not to forget the extension of time at the Coliseum will also mean more resources and money being poured in to keep the event intact. The biggest of all is that the teams and the whole resource structure will have to make close calls regarding their plans for the Daytona 500 event scheduled for this month.
TBD on any time change for Sun & how many days NASCAR stays. Factors:
-Have rain tires (no wipers); could race in damp
-Public safety concerns with heavy rain/flooding
-$$ for extra days in Coliseum, industry to stay
-Timing for teams/industry logistics/final prep for Daytona https://t.co/ixVStCjx04— Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) February 3, 2024

Fans and supporters are hoping that the rain clouds do clear out and they get a good show at the Coliseum. However, the weather updates are not looking good and in case the event is rescheduled to another date, there will be a number of challenges for NASCAR to overlook in order to get this exhibition race underway. Frustrated with these updates, fans have now started to take a jibe at NASCAR in suggesting a better venue for the marquee event.
Venting out his frustration on NASCAR, one fan wrote, “Another year of nascar scheduling every race for a rain day nice.”
Another user looked at the development with a pessimistic lens and provided a cold update, “Looked at the weather app and if they don’t race today, they will not race at all. No way Nascar and teams gonna wait around and spend the $$ to race Wednesday when it clears up.”
Suggesting to go the old way, a user pointed out a better venue option of the Busch Light Clash, “Do you remember when they ran the clash at Daytona? Yeah that was awesome.”

Rounding off, one fan was left confused with the idea of no wipers despite the alert for rain and heavy showers. “I’m confused. If it’s damp out the water will still spray and get on the windshield. So no wipers?”
