It has not been long since Shane van Gisbergen became a full-time driver in NASCAR. Yet, he has already seen some of the sport’s ugly bits. He got into a scuffle with Richard Childress Racing driver Austin Hill and after the race, the Kiwi was not pleased. The former Supercars champion opened up to Denny Hamlin about what went down in the Xfinity Series race and the Joe Gibbs Racing star, who knows a thing or two about “s***shows” revealed it on a recent episode of the Actions Detrimental podcast.
Shane van Gisbergen still not used to NASCAR’s intense competition
Denny Hamlin sat for a discussion with the Kaulig Racing driver during the driver’s parade ahead of the Cup Series race, and that’s when the Kiwi let his feelings be known. It’s common knowledge that most motorsports competitions nowadays take contact very seriously, but NASCAR is a bit lenient in that scenario. Of course, stock car racing is unlike any other form of motorsport and SVG has no choice but to get used to it.

Hamlin shared, “I said ‘what would happen in Supercars in those situations?’ He said, ‘Well normally I wouldn’t have to worry about the #21 because they would penalize him.’ … So he said that Supercars would penalize Austin Hill for unnecessary contact and so he said he would then just run second knowing that the #21 was gonna get a penalty. He said, but he did this so ‘I’m gonna just go ahead and get him right back’.”
“So he says it’s just a little different where you never really have to retaliate in Supercars because the officials handle it. They officiate it like most series does.”
While the Joe Gibbs Racing star understands that certain rules in NASCAR cannot be in line with other forms of motorsports, some provisions need to be made, especially when the matter is contact in with the Truck or Xfinity Series.

The Cup Series racers have long criticized the other two competitions for being far too aggressive. That fact becomes crystal clear towards the last few races of the playoffs where drivers are desperate to get into the final 4. According to Denny Hamlin, drivers causing massive wrecks intentionally during these races should be levied a hefty penalty.
“We’ve seen some really bad egregious stuff that’s happened at Martinsville, complete s*** shows at the end of Martinsville races for Trucks and Xfinity. People trying to get in the final 4, I mean just all out…just junking each other. I think that’s probably…those situations, it is egregious, like I wouldn’t consider the #21 bump on SVG egregious. I think there have been some that I have seen where…there should be a penalty for that. He should have to go to the back, whoever that person was for junking the other person,” the driver of the #11 opined.

It may be a bit weird to hear, but wrecks are a big part of NASCAR. So, it is fair to say that there has to be a line somewhere, and it is up to the organizers to come up with something, and fast. What do you think?
