The Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway might have seen Christopher Bell make his way from the back of the pack to secure a fantastic victory. Yet, race fans were not happy with how boring the race was. NASCAR fans are among the most vocal in the world and they let their thoughts be known about the event on social media, only for an anonymous driver to call them “spoiled”. And that’s all it took for them to go crazy on Reddit, bashing the driver, NASCAR, and even the person who broke the news.

The news was broken by veteran ESPN motorsports journalist Ryan McGee in an article that has since attracted a lot of controversial comments. Phoenix has always been infamous for dishing out snoozefests and as per a lot of fans, Sunday was no different.

Fans hating on Phoenix has reportedly triggered a driver

Another reason why fans might have been as disappointed could be the fact that the first 3 races of the year were nail-biters, especially Atlanta. So when Phoenix came around and delivered its usual, it’s no wonder that people weren’t having it. But for a driver to cut in and call fans spoiled? Now that’s unheard of.

In a report in ESPN, Ryan McGee wrote about his personal conversation with one of the drivers who wished to remain anonymous. NASCAR had run its new aero package for the first time in the Phoenix race and several drivers said that the driving experience was slightly better. But for fans watching from a distance, it was more or less the same. Or boring, in a simple one word. This seemed to annoy one of the racers who texted the senior journalist, “Damn, McGee, everybody got spoiled, didn’t they?”

And that’s all it took to send fans over the edge as they took over on Reddit and heavily criticized the driver, despite not knowing who they might be. They didn’t just stop there. Fans laid bare their frustrations with Phoenix and alleged unethical journalistic practices, putting NASCAR and Ryan McGee in the line of fire as well.

One fan ripped NASCAR to shreds for the poor job they have done recently, and then one of its drivers dared to call out fans for not enjoying a race. “The fan blaming needs to stop. Of all the lazy, tone deaf, insulating, white knighting trends in recent NASCAR history (and there have been no shortage of those) this is the worst. NASCAR is doing a poor job across the board, and if the media was doing it’s job, they’d be speaking truth to NASCAR and having some bravery; not p*****g on their readers and telling them it’s raining,” they commented.

“There is an element of fan expectations rising, but I think that has more to do with NASCAR’s product not living up to its marketing. You can’t hook new fans by promising a barnburner every week and then get upset when there’s not a barnburner every week and they leave,” quipped another.

The main issue, of course, was the Phoenix Raceway. It may be the venue for the championship race and it may be historic but most fans have a consensus. The track is terrible for stock car racing. “It’s a little off-putting to hear multiple people in various positions in the sport we love calling us spoiled. I personally didn’t like Phoenix, but I never really have, and I never went in with the expectations it was going to be a barn burner.”

Another fan was a lot less subtle with their assessment of the situation with the emphasis on the Phoenix race. “How is asking for a better product being spoiled? we have seen races at Phoenix that were really good and we know the track can produce great racing, so if that’s the reason fans are spoiled it is pretty trash reason. I think looking back to the recent past of the track with this car is what we should be looking at now being spoiled from the races this year alone,” they wrote.

And then some people just did not want to believe that an actual NASCAR driver would say this to a journalist, claiming fabrication. “Nobody is saying this lol. Guy had to make up fake quotes to drive this narrative,” one user quipped. It might not seem like a lot but the reaction was fiery and if a driver did actually call fans spoiled, well, it’s safe to say that they would not be doing that again anytime soon.
