During the final stage of the 2023 HighPoint.com 400, Denny Hamlin and his JGR teammate, #19 Martin Truex Jr were tailing Hendrick Motorsports’ #5 Kyle Larson and #48 Alex Bowman. Approaching a turn, Hamlin got close to the #48 Chevy’s rear bumper. Although there was apparently no contact, Alex Bowman spun out, warranting a restart. With Bowman out of the picture, Denny Hamlin placed himself on the inside line of race leader, Kyle Larson, during the final laps’ restart. Executing a overtake, Hamlin drove up the track, running Larson into the outside wall. Displeased with the #11 JGR driver’s actions, Larson then retorted with a bump to Hamlin’s driver-side door while under caution.

Driving down Pocono’s Victory Lane, Hamlin denied trading paint with the HMS Chevy. “Both guys wrecked themselves. There was a lane. He missed the corner first and evidently, he didn’t have his right-side tires clean and when he gassed it up he kept going again…I didn’t hit either one of them. I didn’t touch them.” These words of Hamlin fueled a major controversy, causing the entire NASCAR community to band up and call out the JGR driver for his apparent lies. Coming to their star driver’s rescue, the Joe Gibbs Racing team on behalf of team owner, Coach Gibbs, recently put out a tweet. Posting a photo of Denny Hamlin climbing out of his #11 Toyota, the JGR team wrote, “.@dennyhamlin made no contact with 48”.
