The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season did not end as Kyle Larson had hoped. But that has not discouraged him from going out there and racing for wins after the campaign’s conclusion. The Hendrick Motorsports driver recently broke one of his longest winless runs in midget racing on Friday, as he became a two-time winner of the Hangtown 100 at California’s Placerville Speedway.

The race’s ending saw an intense battle in which the 2021 Cup Series champion emerged victorious. It was his first victory in midget racing in almost two years. Kyle Larson earned $25,000, thanks to his P1 finish, as he brought his consistent Cup Series form into Placerville. The win will give Kyle Larson a much-needed boost of confidence after he failed to get the job done in the Cup Series championship race.

Larson was a happy man on Friday as he expressed his sense of relief after winning the Hangman 100. His last midget race victory came just shy of two years short at the same event. That year, he had won the Cup Series title as well. While the HMS man has not taken part in too many midget races in that time, he acknowledged that it had been the longest he had gone without winning one.

“It was a lot of fun and it was cool to get back into victory lane in a midget. Not that I race them a lot, but it’s been a couple of years since I won a midget race. I’ve run 10 or 12 midget races over the last couple of years and that’s probably the longest I’ve gone without winning a midget race,” the 2-time Hangman 100 winner said, as per Speedway Digest.

Driving in a decade-old Eagle chassis, Kyle Larson seemed to be at his competitive best. He started the race from P6 and took the lead in the event on lap 6. Navigating his way through traffic from the backmarkers and holding off stiff competition, the 31-year-old displayed a solid race craft in the non-stop 30-lap race.

He was locked in an intense battle for the lead with just five laps to go with Logan Seavey. The dirt track conditions were unpredictable as the race had been delayed due to rain three times. However, Kyle Larson seemed to have found a way to navigate the tricky conditions which he explained in the post-race interview.

“The track was in-between, and we didn’t know what it was going to do with all the rain coming and going and tilting it and all that. When they reworked it before the semi, I could tell that the bottom wasn’t quite that good early, so I was just going to commit to the top and try and get some momentum built. The car just got through the holes well compared to everyone else. That allowed me to move around,” the 31-year-old explained.
