NASCAR’s return to Bowman Gray after 54 years is more than just honoring the roots of NASCAR. Despite the track being away from the pinnacle of stock car racing since 1971, races have been taking place on the hallowed track for years. Modified Tour events have been a popular feature of Bowman Gray for decades, and one such legend is set to grace ‘The Clash’ and make his Cup Series debut! Recently, Team AmeriVet announced that it would be 49-year-old Burt Myers taking the steering for them at ‘The Clash’.
Myers is not a stranger to the Bowman Gray tracks as he has amassed victory at the track 11 times, with decades of experience. With only a couple of days left at hand before the iconic Clash, Myers laid out his fearless approach towards tackling his debut Cup Race at his ‘home ground’.

A dream that is getting fulfilled at the age of 49. With NASCAR returning to Bowman Gray, it is one of the biggest opportunities that has come on the way for Burt Myers to prove his worth. Myers has already made a prominent name for himself in the world of short-track racing. He conquered ‘The Madhouse’ in 1999, 2001, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023, and 2024 seasons as the track Modified Tour Champion.
This time he will be seen behind the steering of the No. 50 Citrisafe Chevrolet. Given his range of experience at the tracks, Myers has some advice for the racing community when it comes to claiming the lead. He said, “My driving style is go to the front, try to win. Be smart at the same time. But if you’re not aggressive it’s hard to get to front.” The message is clear, Myers is not taking any half-measures while attempting his first Cup Race.
When asked what kind of racer he is, the veteran said, “Dedicated, hardcore. This is what we do. This is a lifestyle for me”. As a prominent short-track racer, Myers is known for his exceptional driving skills and a little bit of a daredevil aura. In 2014, Myers was subjected to a penalty along with Danny Brown. The reason was on-track aggression, which led to a wreckage at the Bowman Gray Stadium itself. So don’t be surprised to see tempers flaring when Myers takes to the tracks.

Burt Myers’ excellence as a driver goes beyond the Bowman Gray track. He has also claimed the 2010 and 2016 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour Champion and the 2002, 2021, and 2023 SMART Modified Tour Champion. Despite the legacy he carries, this is Myers’ debut at the Cup Series tracks which is indeed quite a stellar feat to achieve. Speaking of the same, Myers added, “I’m very excited to be a part of such a monumental event. Every short-track driver dreams of an opportunity like this. For mine to happen at my home track and to be able to continue my NASCAR family legacy means the world to me”.
Myers was asked if he ever raced in the top three tiers of NASCAR before and he had! Myers said, “I ran a Craftsman Truck Race back in 09′.” Myers’ lone Truck appearance came for SS Green Light Racing at Martinsville in 2009, where he finished 19th after starting 17th on the grid.

Guiding him through the drive will be Chief Tony Eury Jr. He has been in charge of the No. 50 and his guidance is indispensable for Myers. Speaking of how he envisions the drive at Gray, Eury Jr. said, “I’m looking forward to going to the stadium with Burt. We have won a lot of races together in our FURY modified over the years, and to be a part of this historic event with a driver like Burt, it’s hard not to be excited”.

All drivers who have experience with the world of short-track racing, envision hitting the Cup Series track at least once. For Burt Myers, this opportunity came in pretty late. Speaking of how he feels about the same, Myers said, “Every short track driver, anybody that has ever been on this racetrack, they aspire to be a Cup driver. So to get the opportunity [from] the people who supported me and put an effort to make this happen means the world to me. No pressure on me. I never thought I’d be making my first Cup start at 49 years old”. While he is nowhere near the oldest person to take part in a cup race, he will certainly enter the grid with a wealth of experience behind him. To prepare himself best, he will start the weekend off with some modified races.

He further added, “So Saturday, I’ll be involved with the Cook Out Classic modified race during the day when it’s warm, and I’ll be involved with the Cook Out Clash heat races in qualifying and practice on Saturday night, which will lead [into hopefully] the feature on Sunday night.” One will be able to witness Myers at the Madhouse Classic which is a 150-lap run for NASCAR Modified.
Speaking of how much excitement Burt Myers has added to the team, owner, Rebecca Auchmoody said, “I couldn’t be more excited to kick off the racing season at The Clash with Burt Myers […] This event will help us grow as a team with Burt’s experience and Tony Jr. as crew chief. It will contribute towards improving team performance”. With decades of short-track grit behind him, Myers is set to prove that passion and perseverance can defy age on the biggest stage of his career.
