“I don’t expect to win.” With those words, 18-year-old Connor Zilisch set the tone for his Cup Series debut at Circuit of the Americas. While modest, his statement stands in stark contrast to the immense hype surrounding him. Zilisch’s rapid rise in NASCAR is nothing short of extraordinary. From a dominant Xfinity Series debut win in September 2024 to setting a new Truck Series track record earlier in March, the teenager has already made waves.
Beyond NASCAR, Zilisch’s success in endurance racing, including wins at the Rolex 24 and the 12 Hours of Sebring, speaks volumes about his talent. As he steps into his Cup Series seat with Trackhouse Racing, expectations are high. Yet, despite the buzz, Zilisch remains wary of the challenges ahead.

18-year-old Connor Zilisch prepares for Cup Series debut amid rising expectations
Connor Zilisch continues to impress with his remarkable performances. After securing the pole at Friday’s Focused Health 250 in Xfinity qualifying, with a lap time of 97.262 seconds, Zilisch is ready to capitalize on his front-row starting position. This success comes as the 18-year-old continues to rise through NASCAR’s ranks.
Reflecting on his achievement, Zilisch acknowledged the challenges ahead of his participation in the Cup Series. He mentioned that race day would likely be more chaotic, especially as it’s his first time racing in the Cup car. “Tomorrow is going to be a little tougher. It’s a bit more of a chaotic day… I’m sure that’s going to bring some calamity.” Zilisch will first take part in the late-morning Cup Series Practice and Qualifying sessions. He will then participate in the Focused Health 250 Xfinity race at 2:30 p.m., following a brief break. An already busy weekend will undoubtedly get even more stressful due to the back-to-back racing.
Zilisch is eager to drive the Cup car for the first time, but he is also aware of the difficulties that may arise. He recognizes that the race will be more challenging because of the surrounding noise. “I’m just going to have to keep blocking it out and doing my best to do my thing,” he said, reinforcing his commitment to staying focused on his execution. “It’s good to get some reps on the track before,” Zilisch went on to stress the importance of his pre-Cup Series practice time. One significant advantage for the rookie is the chance to get experience and familiarity with the track prior to the big event. When dealing with such a strict schedule and high expectations, it will be very beneficial.

Zilisch’s mature approach to handling chaos will be crucial as he juggles the demands of both the Cup and Xfinity Series. Despite the potential for added pressure, he plans to stay calm and stick to his racing skills. The 18-year-old has demonstrated his abilities on a number of platforms already. He is now in a position to maintain that momentum throughout the Cup Series. Zilisch could potentially break the previous record at COTA if everything goes according to plan. One that has stood for more than 16 years.

Connor Zilisch eyes Joey Logano’s record at COTA in the Cup Series
Connor Zilisch has accelerated his journey to become the youngest-ever Cup Series champion, looking to surpass Joey Logano’s record. Zilisch wants to win his first Cup Series before his 19th birthday, that is coming up in July. He would be the youngest if he won at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA). He will be only eight days, seven months, and eighteen years.
With a record at 19 years, 1 month, and 4 days, Logano set it in 2016. Zilisch’s attempt is especially remarkable because no one has come close to surpassing it since. Zilisch has already demonstrated in the Xfinity qualifying that he performs well under duress, despite his lack of experience in the Cup vehicle. He could be a threat to win the Cup Series race at COTA because of his mettle.

In an interview, Joey Logano has commended Zilisch’s skills. “He’s a very talented race car driver…his road racing abilities are very good. So, I’d expect him to be pretty solid.” When asked about advice for Zilisch, Logano jokingly responded, “Get out of my way.” His words reflect the respect Zilisch has already earned.
For Zilisch, the next few days at COTA will be critical. He might shatter a 16-year-old record and create history if he can perform well under pressure. Can the young driver win at COTA despite the mayhem of his Cup debut? Or will Logano’s record stand the test of time?
