NASCAR drivers are known for their bravery, skill, and ability to take on high-speed races on some of the most dangerous tracks in the world. The recent Talladega race was a prime example of this, as drivers Kyle Larson and Ryan Preece were involved in a terrifying wreck that left many wondering how they could have walked away from the incident. In the latest episode of Door Bumper Clear titled ‘Talladega: The track is not the problem,’ NASCAR insider Brett Griffin discussed the incident and praised the drivers for their bravery and resilience.

Brett Griffin’s claims of NASCAR drivers being soldiers

In the episode, Griffin compared NASCAR drivers to soldiers going off to war, as they face dangerous conditions and know that their fate is not entirely in their own hands. The Talladega race was no exception, as drivers were faced with high speeds, close quarters, and the potential for massive wrecks. Despite this, Griffin praised Larson and Preece for their bravery and resilience in the aftermath of the crash.

He said, “Kyle Larson and Ryan Preece and all them guys yesterday, they were in a wreck that was not of their making, they were in a massive wreck pulling tons of G’s, whiplash. I mean the replay I saw, Preece could have easily broken his wrist in that crash. I think they truly land at these places and this is the part of the mystique of it, this is part of what makes them great, this is part of what makes them heroes.”

Griffin emphasized that the drivers know what they are getting into when they land at tracks like Talladega and Daytona. They understand that their safety is not entirely in their own hands, but they still go out and race with everything they have. However,  this does not mean that safety should be ignored or compromised. NASCAR has made significant strides in recent years to improve safety measures and reduce the risk of serious injuries or fatalities.

So what exactly happened at Talladega? During an overtime restart, Larson was involved in a crash that caused him to go down the banking and then bounce back up, leading to a collision on the passenger side of his car with Ryan Preece’s #41 Ford Mustang. The impact caused a door bar from Larson’s Camaro to detach and intrude into the cabin. Evidence of the collision was also left on the composite door panel.

From Preece’s in-car view, Larson’s Camaro can be seen sliding back up the banking while tilting on the passenger side. This resulted in the front end of Preece’s car hitting Larson’s car at an angle, causing the passenger side window to be ejected immediately due to the pressure of the impact.

In the case of Larson and Preece, both drivers were able to walk away from the crash with relatively minor injuries. Larson’s car suffered significant damage, and a door bar from his Camaro became detached and intruded into the cabin. However, the safety measures in place prevented the situation from becoming much worse.
