NASCAR fans were left with a bitter taste in their mouths after a controversial move by Joey Logano triggered a multi-car crash in the GEICO 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway. The incident happened late in the race when Logano was hit by Corey LaJoie, causing Logano’s car to careen into the side of Daniel Suarez and triggering a dangerous multi-car pile-up.

While Logano managed to continue in the race, several fans and drivers were quick to criticize the move, with some labeling Logano as “selfish.” Fans pointed out that Logano has been vocal in the past about the dangers of superspeedways and the need for drivers to be cautious, yet his own actions seemed to contradict his statements.

The two frontrunners of the season-opener at the Daytona International Speedway this season seem to have lost their chance of winning Sunday’s GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway due to a late multi-car collision. While racing outside the top-15, Logano received an unexpected bump from LaJoie at turn two’s exit, causing the Team Penske driver to careen while he tried changing lanes which ultimately resulted in him crashing into Suarez and setting off a chain reaction.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr and Harrison Burton were also caught in the mayhem, with Burton retiring from the race and Stenhouse Jr returning on the lead lap. William Byron and Riley Herbst incurred minor damage but managed to fix their cars without falling further behind.

Despite significant damage, Logano continued racing and remained on the lead lap, eventually leading to overtime. The # 22 Ford Mustang could only secure ..a the 30th position.

Some fans have critiqued that Logano’s move was particularly dangerous because he failed to follow the unwritten rule of staying high or low against the wall when the pack is coming up on lapped cars. In other words, Logano failed to be a “team player” and put the safety of other drivers at risk.

The incident has reignited a longstanding debate in NASCAR about what constitutes fair play and good sportsmanship. While some fans argue that drivers need to be aggressive and take risks in order to win races, others believe that there are certain unwritten rules that should be followed to ensure everyone’s safety on the track. This sentiment was echoed by NASCAR Youtuber Eric Estepp who tweeted after the incident with several agreeing with his thoughts.

One fan on social media summed it up well, stating, “That was so dangerous. #whatanidiot.” while another added, “Agreed! My problem with it is Joey is the one who complains about ‘dangerous’ moves, yet that’s the kind of stuff he does.”

Of course, not everyone agrees with this assessment. Some fans have pointed out that Logano’s move, while risky, was not necessarily “selfish.” They argue that Logano was simply doing what he needed to do to win the race, and that his actions were no different from those of other successful NASCAR drivers like Dale Earnhardt Sr.

As one fan put it, “Selfish wins races. People and other drivers can complain all they want. Earnhardt Sr. was selfish too. All about winning.”

While it is certainly true that successful NASCAR drivers often exhibit a certain degree of selfishness and competitiveness, it is important to remember that there are still certain limits that should not be crossed. At the end of the day, safety should always be the top priority, and drivers who ignore this fact risk not only their own lives but the lives of their fellow competitors.
