The very first NASCAR championship is an incomparable achievement for any racer. But for Cole Custer, this was also a season to establish his talent after being demoted from the Cup Series. Not only did he display his driving excellence, but the #00 Ford driver redeemed Stewart-Haas Racing’s subpar season. However, despite having the fastest car on the 1-mile Phoenix track, Custer saw his glistening trophy momentarily disappear before his eyes when Dale Jr’s #7 driver took advantage of the overtime restart.

After taking over the lead from John Hunter Nemechek, the Stage 2 winner needed to maintain it for five more laps. All four championship contenders were racing in the Top 4 positions. Then, the racing authorities made a contentious decision to restart the race. Anthony Alfredo’s #78 Chevrolet spun at the back and gave another shot at the title to

Justin Allgaier. Speaking to Dale Jr’s Dirty Mo Media, Custer described his state of mind when he did not get his desired restart.

Custer recalled, “I think I said on the radio [when caution was called], ‘These effing idiots’, no I said clowns.” He continued, “You’re just mad at the moment at that happening. At the end of the day, there’s nothing you can do about it. So you take a deep breath and you’re like alright, you just got to focus on the restart for two more laps and it’s gonna be what it’s gonna be.” At the same time, the #00 driver was equally impressed with the skillful way Allgaier capitalized on the opportunity.

Custer said, “We both drove until we saw Jesus. We had a great car to be able to make it stick. But it was a wild last couple of laps for sure.” It was a testament to his experience and ability to handle such a pressured situation when he refused to stop fighting until he regained his top spot. Dale Earnhardt Jr himself commended the SHR driver’s stunning comeback performance this year.

JR Motorsports’ Justin Allgaier and Same Mayer finished 3rd and 5th respectively. But team owner Dale Earnhardt Jr did not fail to congratulate Cole Custer on his social media page. As viewers watched in amazement, Custer inched past Justin Allgaier on the final lap of the championship race last weekend. But how did Custer himself describe the climactic restart of the race?

Custer explained, “It’s always a toss-up at the top or the bottom there. And I felt like with the resin coming in, the top was going to be a little bit better because you could just send it off in there and the resin would catch you, but it didn’t work out. The one thing I didn’t want to happen happened with the 7 [Allgaier] getting outside of me.”

“I tried to block him, but he was able to get there. And from there I was three wide in the middle and I knew I was just in a no-win situation pretty much on the entry. So I made sure I made the corner, didn’t wreck, and tried to downshift it and just get a good exit. And from there just was all it would work out.”
