NASCAR has never been only about the drivers and the cars. It’s also about the fans and every other individual involved with the sport. Take Leigh Diffey, for example. The man has been an auto racing and track and field commentator over the years, and the Coke Zero Sugar 400 was the first race for which he was the play-by-play announcer for the Cup Series.
This promotion came to Diffey as Rick Allen was moved into the lead race announcer role for NBC Sports’ NASCAR Xfinity Series coverage. Diffey, known for his iconic voice in motorsports, has previously lent his vocal talents to many racing series, including Formula One, IMSA, Supercross, MotoGP, and, of course, NASCAR. This makes it highly likely that fans recognize his voice and charisma on the mic. After his promotion to play-by-play announcer, Diffey is not one to shy away from talking to his fans directly, as he shared what his role means to him.

As Leigh Diffey accepted the honor of being the Cup Series play-by-play announcer, the Daytona broadcast was a great hit. Many fans recognized his voice over the weekend, and when he made a cameo on Dale Jr. Download after that, he wanted to say a few kind words to his fans.
Diffey addressed his fans on the podcast, stating, “I’d like them to know that, just how seriously I’m taking it, there’s not a single broadcast from the planet who’s going to please everybody. But my message would be that the NASCAR fan base is a sacred group of people.”
This not only makes it clear that Diffey is not just a commentator; he is one who takes his job very seriously. While it cannot be confirmed if that was the reason he got promoted, he continued to explain, “I have the utmost respect for it and for the sport, and I feel privileged to be here and to be in the position of commentating on the races for you.”
Diffey has a point to prove, as he hopes his fans notice the effort he puts in when it comes to his research for the Daytona race. The NBC announcer then revealed the reason he likes to be so thorough with his research, saying it’s “not for myself or for my employers, but for my fans, for the viewers.”
