A word that can describe the current situation within the camp of NASCAR’s winningest team, Hendrick Motorsports, is “betwixt.” While the team has reasons to rejoice after two of its drivers have overcome the points barrier and glided into the post-season, With William Byron at the top and Kyle Larson at 5th with 662 points, the other two drivers, including 2020 Cup Series champion Chase Elliott, are still struggling.

As a result, both Elliott and Alex Bowman have been at the center of major discussions about whether they will be able to make it to the playoffs. However, it seems that not all are in the same boat when it comes to shrugging off the idea that the drivers will not be able to make it to the Playoffs. This was apparent when Kyle Larson tried to defend his teammates and shut down all the dubiousness once and for all in the pre-race interview ahead of the Michigan race.

The 2023 Cup Series season so far for Chase Elliott has been a forgettable one. Apart from injuries and suspension, the driver has strived to deliver a favorable finish, but in vain. Elliott has finished in all the positions in the top 10 except for the podium finish, a finish that he is in dire need of with only four races left in the season. While the golden boy of NASCAR is trying to cling to the hopes of entering the post-season, the NASCAR veterans, on the other hand, have delivered their verdict.

To juxtapose, it seems that Kyle Larson would love to be on the other side and maintain his allegiance to his teammates, as he delivered his stance in the pre-race interview to Frontstretch media. When asked about the team’s struggles so far in the season and how the team is coping with them, the No. 5 Chevrolet driver replied, “Alex and Chase, they have had their injuries and stuff throughout the year so that’s hard to it.”

“Takes time to kind of get your mojo back after that and get back into the rhythm. I think you are seeing here the last few weeks, Chase is having better weekends, start to finish which is good. And Alex as well has some better speed here as of late. I feel like our teams have been in a good spot, due to the injuries has been, as a whole our organization it probably doesn’t look like we are as good as we typically are,” Larson added.

Nonetheless, the No. 9 Chevy is surely trying to the best of his ability to jump back to his championship-winning self, when he would dominate the tracks week in and week out. With still 40 points below the cut-line, the driver remains adamant and is hopeful that he will clinch the playoff spot.

Moreover, he considers that winning a race and collecting points to enter the playoffs are alike in every sense. According to Elliot, And like I’ve said 1000 times since I’ve been back, I think gaining a lot of points and contending for wins is very much one and the same. It’s not a coincidence that the guys that are high up in points have race wins, but they’re also leading the regular season [championship].”

“Those two things go hand in hand. If you’re gaining a lot of points, you’re probably going to have a shot to win, and if you’re not, then you’re probably not going to have a shot to win […] I just want to be a guy that can go and contend every week and be in the in the running wherever we go.”

With that being said, it remains to be seen whether the poster boy of NASCAR is able to clinch a victory in the remaining four races of the regular season and prove otherwise to his critics, or will the driver have to give up his hope of entering the playoffs for the first time in his Cup Series career?
