The NASCAR Xfinity Series just concluded its regular season and Cole Custer was crowned the champion after the Bristol race. For the defending champion, this is the second regular series title. The race, however, wasn’t off to a good start for the SHR driver, he scrapped the wall in the initial laps and had a puncture, dropping several positions. Despite that, he showed his prowess in the final stages of the race climbing back up. He led 104 laps and bagged his second season win.
What also aided his victory was the misfortune of JR Motorsport’s Justin Allgaier. Entering the race as the favorite to win the regular season title, the #7 had a 43-point lead. However, a myriad of problems stood in his way as he finished 30 in the race and 6 laps down. Allgaier lost to Custer by just three points. After the race, a debate ignited among the fans, not on who was the more deserving to win the title. But about a tool that made its way to the track after a botched-up pit stop.

Allgaier had a good start to his race. After qualifying 4th, he quickly took the lead and maintained it for 52 laps in stage one. The crucial points could have widened his cushion in the points table. But thanks to Austin Green, who wrecked him and had Allgaier’s bumper scrapped off, sent him to the pit lanes. This led him to lose several track positions. However, the #7 drove the bumper-less car to the front of the pack only to get wrecked again by Sheldon Creed in the final stage of the race.
The contact with Creed led to his car spinning and diving nose-first into the wall. Naturally, this left Justin Allgaier disappointed. In the post-race interview, he said, “What a frustrating night. We did all the right things, we led the beginning of the race, really thought we had the best car in the field … And then when the No. 32 blew the right-front and kind of came back across, ripped the rear bumper cover off — that obviously changed the game for us (and) put us behind.”
However, what had fans more entertained was Justin Allgaier’s pit stop after the crash. Post the repairs, a Sawzall was left near his splitter, which got dragged to the track as Allgaier joined the race back. Leaving sparks all across the track. The tool was dragged underneath his car for quite some distance before it spun out of the way. It was hilarious as the Sawzall just sat there on the track and the commentator screamed “free tools!” Seeing that, everyone had one question in mind, no, not whether it damaged Allgaier’s car further. But if the tool still worked?

The Sawzall was of the Dewalt company who thanks to Allgaier have gotten a free test of their product’s durability. This incident had fans debate over the best Sawzalls available in the market. While some laud Dewalt, others hit out at the NASCAR team and suggested alternate brands.

Usually, fans are unaware of what tools their favorite teams use as it is a minor thing and never gets the limelight. However, the incident shed light on the Sawzall. “Sawzall” has become a generic term for all reciprocating saws. Which are handheld tools with a large blade that moves back and forth, similar to a jigsaw. It is often used in NASCAR to cut pieces of the car. In Justin Allgaier’s case, it was initially used to cut off his hanging bumper.
The current one the teams use is of the Dewalt brand and some fans loved how it passed the toughest durability test. Even though you would rarely find the Sawzall in that situation, it proves the product’s strength. One fan wrote, “If I’m Dewalt, this is the only commercial I run for the rest of the year.” Another fan of Dewalt Sawzall echoed the same emotions as he wrote, “Dewalt 🔥”
NASCAR uses many power tools in addition to the Sawzall like rivet guns, screw guns, and drills. To anyone who watched the race, it was unbelievable that the incident left the tool intact and in one piece. A fan who is a self-proclaimed tool expert was impressed. He wrote, “I’ve been a power tools expert for 20 years, that should never happen.”

However, not everyone is a fan of Dewalt, some think that the brand’s close competitor ‘Milwaukee tools’ has better Sawzalls. The fan showing his brand loyalty wrote, “nah I’m still sticking with Milwaukee.” Another fan was surprised that the team is still using outdated tools when more superior ones are available in the market. The fan wrote, “How is a NASCAR team still using an 18 volt Dewalt.”
Maybe Dale Earnhardt Jr. should take notes and upgrade JR Motorsports’ arsenal of tools. Jokes apart the incident could have been dangerous and luckily it wasn’t. What did you think about it? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
