There is no denial in the fact that apart from Daytona and Charlotte Motor Speedway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway holds a coveted place in the hearts of NASCAR drivers. It is undeniably the Crown Jewel race in NASCAR’s calendar.
One of the few traditions that exist on the tracks of Indianapolis is the kissing of the bricks that are laid on the tracks. This yard of bricks became one of the pivotal and hallowed places for drivers. And the tradition of kissing the bricks can be dated back to Dale Jarrett after he won the race and decided to kiss the bricks laid there. Thus began the tradition that would be followed by every other victor on the track.
Now, the heart of the Hendrick Motorsports‘ speedster has spoken, and it prays to live the day when he too can repeat the signature gesture. He still has a year to bring his wish to fruition—the Indy 500 next year as well as the midget racing on the tracks of Indianapolis.
In the episode of DIRT, the 2021 Cup Series champion, after finishing 5th in the midget racing, exclaimed, “I was obviously bummed because I didn’t win but also bummed because I never felt like I had an opportunity to drive up there and battle for the win.”
The Chili Bowl winner, after seeing the victor kiss the bricks, added, “That’s like Indy’s thing, if you win there you kiss the bricks. Buddy, he looked like he was making love to the bricks. So, I wasn’t quite as intimate with the bricks as he was.”
Larson also asserted the fact, “I hope some to asks me if the only guy that’s kissed the bricks on the dirt track as well as for the Indy 500 and whatever we end up racing on in NASCAR.”
