Former Cup Series champion Chase Elliott has not been having one of his better seasons this year. Missing one too many races, he failed to qualify for the 2023 playoffs and is yet to win a single race. However, he still has something to race for as his No. 9 team is still in contention for the owner’s standings. Despite not making it to the final 16, Elliott has been putting up some impressive displays of skill in the playoff tracks. In the 5 races that have been held so far, he has managed to finish in the top 10 on 4 occasions.

Elliott goes to Charlotte next weekend after completing his latest race at Talladega at P7. Needless to say, he is one of the best drivers on road courses. As he heads to the Roval once again, the clocks warrant a rewind to 2019 when he created one of the most memorable racing experiences on the track.

Unlike 2023, the Hendrick Motorsports star had made it to the playoffs in 2019. Entering the Bank of America Roval 400 race, he had already made it to the next round of the contest but still fought nail and tooth for the win. As he led the race with 45 laps, he missed turn 1 and headed straight into the barrier on the corner called the “Heartburn Turn”. The Roval’s design makes it difficult for any driver to gather momentum and race in front of the others. Elliott’s caution was just one among the 11 that came up over the 109 laps that day.

After crashing against the barrier, any other driver would have retired the car and walked away considering that there wasn’t much else to gain from there by continuing the race. But Elliott recovered, took his Chevy back to the track and slowly worked his way up the ladder from P37. By the end of the race, he edged past the likes of Kevin Harvick and Alex Bowman to steal the win by taking a late lead with 5 laps to go. The result of resilience was 5 crucial playoff points.

Talking to the press in the aftermath, he said, “What a day. Such a fast NAPA Camaro ZL1, and honestly that was the only reason we were able to get back in it. I pretty well blew it and got the cautions at the right time and brought it home… But I don’t think that I could have done anything more stupid, leading that race.” The win was his 3rd of the year and his first at the Roval. After crossing the checkered flag, he made sure to celebrate the remarkable win in some fashion as he headed to the spot of his crash and entertained the fans.

Elliott led 35 of the day’s laps but was pretty much lost after his crash. But his will to fight back and the four cautions that popped up over the last 20 laps of the race aided him as he picked out his contenders one by one. After claiming his win, the driver drove back to Turn 1 of the 2.3-mile course where he’d initially crashed and fired up a burnout, much to the joy of the fans. Talking to the fans after getting out of his car, he asked, “Holy moly, did y’all like that? What a mistake. Holy moly. You talk about messing something up. Right here. Don’t do that.”

The No. 9 driver had crossed with finish line with a 3.016 second lead over teammate Bowman who himself had made a spectacular run from the end of the grid to finish 2nd behind Elliott. The finishes had ensured that both the drivers advanced to the round of 12 that year. Coming back to 2023, neither Bowman nor Elliott is in contention for the championship going to the Roval. Despite not having much at stake, Chase Elliott can be expected to put up his best performance at the course thus far and pull his weight for the sake of Rick Hendrick. Should he end up winning once again, it will be his 3rd win at the Roval and he will continue being the track’s most winningest racer.
