Since 1985, the NASCAR All-Star Race has been in operation as an annual event. Truthfully, this race has no bearing on the Cup Series championship, and it is invitation-only. To be eligible, you have to have been a race winner in the previous season or won a race in the current season. Even being a past NASCAR Cup Series champion or a past All-Star winner is a good enough qualification.
The question is, what makes the All-Star race so lucrative for NASCAR Cup drivers? Winning this race does not change anything from a championship perspective, but it is as good as competing and winning in the pre-season Busch Light Clash, which does not impart points either. Despite this, all of the drivers compete to try and win these iconic events.
What the race lacks in championship points, it makes up for in monetary value. To be precise, winning this race nets a prize of $1 million. It is known as the All-Star Race because the entrants are all race winners or former champions. To draw a comparison for understanding, It is as good as having all the F1 drivers who have won at least one race, compete amongst themselves to see who is the best driver.

There is also the All-Star Open, which allows the remaining drivers on the Cup grid to try and qualify for the main draw. There is also a fan vote where some drivers campaign so that the one with the most votes finds themselves also competing.
William Byron adds to the race’s relevance and makes the race a superior aspect of the event, “I think it’s super important. I think that it is a sense of pride as a race team to be in the All-Star race. I think our All-Star race is more important than other sports. We actually put the same effort [as for the points paying races], same everything into it. We race the same. Maybe even more aggressive than other sports.”

Another advantage of this being a non-championship event is that NASCAR can experiment. With 2025 not that far on the horizon, the sport will want to test out the regulation changes for the coming year. Since there is limited in-season testing, events like the All-Star race are the perfect opportunity to test the waters. So for the 2024 edition, Goodyear and NASCAR are testing new tire compounds.
These tires are expected to spice up the strategy because they are reportedly highly wearable. A track like the North Wilkesboro Speedway could be a chance to see how these tires fit on a short track. Especially considering that one of the biggest complaints in recent NASCAR history has to revolve around the short-track package.
