Fraternal love grows past rocky patches. In the NASCAR world, the most iconic brother duo is probably the Busch brothers. The older Kurt Busch established himself earlier, notching 34 Cup race victories over 23 years. His race career crudely screeched to a halt in 2022 when a wreck-induced concussion crippled him. However, Busch will soon hit the racetrack again, and cannot help but remember a sweet memory with his brother Kyle.
Kyle Busch has always been dubbed ‘Rowdy’, which is a nod to his aggressive driving style. While this signature style has propelled him to 63 Cup Series race wins, it has also led to conflicts with peers including his brother. Despite that, Kurt tipped his hat to share a win with his brother.

The Busch brothers have been a spectacular duo on NASCAR racetracks. Yet even siblings can strike up a bitter rivalry in the same workplace. Back in 2008, both Kyle and Kurt Busch were running the All-Star Race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Both coveted the $1 million prize, which seemed too attractive to Kyle. As a result, the young Rowdy ended up crashing into his brother. The two took turns blaming each other for the accident. However, fast forward to 2025, and you will witness a blooming brotherly relationship. The older Busch offered the latest evidence of that.
After spending two years in retirement, Kurt Busch is prepared to return to the racetrack. He will enter the 2025 Race of Champions at Accor Stadium in Sydney, Australia. Partnering up with renowned stunt performer Travis Pastrana, Busch will make his third appearance at the event.
He recently did a Q&A session on Twitter, where he answered questions about his comeback. There, he mentioned his most memorable RoC moment – when he and Kyle finished second to Team Germany in the 2017 event. “One of my most favorite, memorable moments that popped up…was of course,” he added a 6-word revelation, “standing on podium with my brother.”

That cherished moment also marked the last time Kurt Busch appeared in the Race of Champions. Kurt and his brother have engaged in healthy competition before too. In a 2015 race at Sonoma Raceway, they had a spirited battle before Kyle Busch stole the win and Kurt finished second. The same scenario unfolded in Bristol in 2019. However, Kurt got his revenge in Kentucky the same year, out-dueling Kyle. That time, Kurt clinched the first position while Kyle could only grab second. Then, Kurt admitted with a proud smile: “It’s special to race against my little brother each and every week.”
The sentiment goes both ways. Kyle Busch also harbors affectionate thoughts about his brother.

He bade a teary goodbye

When the Next-Gen car rolled out in 2022, a slew of unfortunate wrecks began. Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin was involved in a 13-car crash in Daytona. The No. 11 driver commented that the impact was so jarring that he felt like his jaw was demolished. Similarly, Kurt Busch also fell prey to the early ravages of the Next-Gen. During his final qualifying lap at Pocono Raceway, he chose to take the turn low, and his car lost rear traction. His car hit the wall twice with a tremendous impact, first a rear-impact collision and then the front. As a result, Kurt incurred a concussion that added to his long health battle with arthritis and gout.
As a consequence, Kurt Busch had no option but to hang up his firesuit earlier than expected. His fans and peers were sad to see him leave early. However, the person who probably missed him the most was his brother. Kyle Busch wrote on Twitter in 2023: “Congratulations @kurtbusch. Proud to have a front row seat for your career from the very beginning working on your cars, racing against you to watching you become a NASCAR Champion and appreciating all your accomplishments. I will miss you out there every out there every Sunday!”
