The Verizon 200 at the Brickyard was indeed a shocker for many, especially for Chase Elliott and HMS fans. The 2020 Cup Series champion and road racer who was eyeing a shot at redemption at Indy was denied a win by Michael McDowell of Front Row Motorsports, who defied all odds, acing the 2.5-mil and, putting on a clinical performance.

While McDowell racked up his 2nd career win at one of the most iconic tracks in the sport, his win was more like a bomb for Elliott fans, who were anticipating their favorite driver’s return to glory. However, for Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Denny Hamlin, McDowell’s triumph was a win. Wondering how?

Reacting to the impeccable race that was so clean, like the bright blue sky at the track, a former NASCAR driver and insider revealed how the #34 driver’s performance was more of a win-win situation for him and Hamlin, who finished 19th.

Former NASCAR driver and dirt fanatic details how McDowell’s Indy win complemented Denny Hamlin

What looked like another Chase Elliott road show at Indy was halted by FRM’s Michael McDowell, who outright dominated the 14-turn road course, leading more than 50 laps in the 82-lap race. While HMS fans were let down to see Elliottedged out to the 2nd spot, making his situation all the more dire with the playoffs closing in, Hamlin, who finished 19th, had the last laugh, or that’s what Kenny Wallace thinks.

The former driver and dirt racing fanatic, following the race, cleared the air as he got to business in his popular show, The Kenny Wallace Show. Mentioning Hamlin’s social media with the race-winning #34 driver, prompting McDowell to prove his mettle, Wallace said, “Listen, I just like Denny Hamlin because he’s a lot like me, and respond right here, Kenny Wallace you’re kissing Denny Hamlin’s a** too much. I’m not but he wins again because he’s like me, Denny loves to spar you know like the bar stool guy, right? You want to spar? Lets spar!”

While the veteran Wallace is not a fan of the new road course at Indy, saying that the old shoebox-shaped oval will always be the Brickyard, he too acknowledged how grim McDowell’s chances were against Elliott and his superior HMS equipment. With the JGR veteran pushing his fellow driver beyond his limit to bring up his 2nd career win at the grandest of all the stages, Wallace too believes Hamlin yet again had the last laugh despite him losing the battle at Indy and his bet to McDowell.

The veteran chimed in with his take, saying it’s more like a “tongue-in-cheek” situation with Hamlin losing the bet but instead pushing a fellow driver beyond what we thought was his limit. Wallace once again proved why Hamlin is, like himself, always up for a challenge, be it on the track or on any platform.

Racing is more of a team sport. It takes a lot more than just outright speed and the driver’s skill to win in any racing promotion. While this aspect favors the bigger teams and the more experienced drivers, there’s always an instance when you are proven wrong.

That’s what exactly happened at Indy. While the community was anticipating the return of Chase Elliott to the victory lane, an underdog reigned victorious, editing out the 2020 Cup Series champion to 2nd place, once again highlighting the David vs. Goliath tale. McDowell, with his FRM #34 Ford, claimed the win over one of the winningest teams in the sport, and that too in stellar fashion.

Though this is the reality of the situation, much like Hamlin, who praised his Charlotte adversary, Chase Elliott, for his road racing capabilities, Wallace too sided with Hamlin with this obvious fact. “So a while back Denny Hamlin says there ain’t no way Michael McDowell is going to outrun Chase Elliott, it’s a fair statement because dont lie because you and I love Chase Elliott, he’s our man all right? Would you have said after, listen Chase Elliott is our best road course driver in the last 7 years, he has won everything.”
