The 43-year-old really became public enemy number 1 when he poured salts into the crowds’ wounds, shrugging off their jeers and instead giving one back to them, indirectly mentioning his friend turned rival Kyle Larson, saying, “I beat your favorite driver – all of them.” Even though the 23XI Racing co-owner couldn’t advance into the final 4 owing to a series of unfortunate mechanical issues in the final rounds of the tournament, his act of riling up the crowd in Bristol really got fans boiling.

He said,

“I think you have gained more fans, I think people have gotten to know you better through the show, you can’t help but learn really who somebody is when they are putting themselves out there like that and people will choose to like or not like what they hear, right? Seems like you’ve grown fanbase but to your point, you’ve also stoked the fire a little bit with some of the people that don’t like you, they’re still listening. I think all of those things are great.”
