Has Tyler Reddick learned his lesson? The 23XI Racing driver was involved in a multi-car wreck at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and finds himself in a precarious position going into the penultimate Round of Eight race. As things stand, he is 30 points below the elimination cutline going into Homestead-Miami with little margin for error for the regular series champion. Having secured the third pole of his season ahead of the Straight Talk Wireless 400, will Reddick be able to capitalize on this opportunity?

With the stakes higher than ever, Denny Hamlin is issuing a warning sign to Reddick about not letting his aggressive driving style hamper his chances of making it to Championship 4. With just two races remaining, time is running out for the No. 45 driver to turn his season around and remain in contention at Phoenix Raceway later this year.

The race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was somewhat of a missed opportunity for Tyler Reddick. The California native started just behind Christopher Bell at the 2024 South Point 400 and went on to win the opening stage after 80 laps, securing valuable points in the process. It was looking like a good day for the 28-year-old until an incident on Lap 89 changed everything. Trying to be aggressive after the restart, Reddick was caught in the crossfire after Chase Elliott and Martin Truex Jr. bumped into each other, forcing the 23XI Racing driver to retire early for the third time this season.

Urging Tyler Reddick to keep his aggressive driving style measured in the upcoming races, Denny Hamlin said in the pre-race press conference, “It’s a very fine line with Tyler just simply because his aggressiveness is what makes him so fast but sometimes it doesn’t get you to the finish. But there’s a fine line there, right? If you start trying to pull back, change the way that you’ve kind of always done things, it’s just sometimes you can doubt too much, and certainly, in our situations where you got to make split-second decisions, you just don’t have time to second guess and say, you know, you got to just trust your instincts really and just live with the outcome.”

Having been eliminated from the Round of Eight last year, Tyler Reddick will be keen to avoid the same mistakes this time around. Even though Hamlin felt that his 23XI Racing driver was at fault for the incident in Las Vegas, saying, “I thought that it was probably a little bit too aggressive on Tyler’s part,” the 28-year-old will not be changing his driving style anytime soon. Had luck been on his side, he could have been in contention for a victory in the opening Round of Eight race, a factor that won’t be going unnoticed.

However, as co-owner of the team, Denny Hamlin is justifiably concerned about the result, especially because his driver could have secured his third win of the season. Reflecting on whether he could have been more conservative in his approach, Reddick said, “Just not who I am, but it is unfortunate. It took us out of the race.”

Given his lackluster record at Martinsville, the 28-year-old will know that Homestead-Miami represents his best chance of keeping his championship hopes alive. It’s only a matter of whether he can take the opportunity with both hands and pull off a clutch performance.

Tyler Reddick will be hopeful about his chances at Homestead-Miami. After all, the 28-year-old knows the 1.5-mile track like the back of his hand, having secured three top-five finishes in four Cup Series appearances. He has also won two races in the Xfinity Series, with the only disappointing result being a DNF. While recklessness in his driving style is a factor Hamlin hopes he can improve on, Reddick is unfazed about what could go wrong and has his eyes on the prize.

Knowing that getting a result at the Straight Talk Wireless 400 would be necessary to maintain his title hopes, Tyler Reddick was asked if he could capitalize on the misfortune of his rivals during the race. He candidly responded, “I wouldn’t rule it out, but for us to advance, today we have to run top-3 and score a lot of points, and if we want to win this race, we got to do the same thing. Hopefully, we get some things to go our way along the way, but we got to focus on just going into this weekend with intent of winning.”

Homestead-Miami is one of the most beloved tracks for drivers and was used to determine NASCAR’s champion from 2002 to 2019. The 1.5-mile worn-out surface is expected to reward Tyler Reddick’s driving style, as it plays to the strengths of drivers who can run against the wall in a high line.
