The race at the Texas Motor Speedway over the weekend wasn’t without its drama. With Hendrick Motorsports’ 25-year-old William Byron finding the victory lane, the other 11 playoff contenders were forced to wait another week for redemption. With the usual crashes, pit-road problems and tire issues marring the chances of many behind the wheel, one incident that stood out at the Wild West was an early pit-road accident that involved Joe Gibbs Racing teammates, Denny Hamlin and Ty Gibbs.
Despite being able to carry on with the race, Denny’s frustration at the incident was made clear through his Instagram handle.

Last weekend at Bristol, Denny Hamlin finally answered his call and finished the race at P1 to enter the second stage in style. Having waited too long to bag that Cup Series championship, he has been racing with all that he has got. Despite the enmity from fans, it was expected that he would draw up a performance similar to the one at Bristol. However, he fell a step short and finished P5 at Texas. Considering the accident that he encountered at the end of the opening stage, the finish can definitely be viewed favorably.
Coming out of the pit stops at lap 77, Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 car collided with Ty Gibbs’ No. 54 since the latter did not leave enough exit room. The collision caused enough damage for Ty’s car to retire. While Denny overcame the sustained damages and went on with the race, they certainly did affect his car’s performance. Collecting a video of the incident from NASCAR’s official Instagram handle, Denny Hamlin share it on his Instagram story. The commentator can be heard saying, “Where is Ty going?! I mean, Ty is in the middle of the lane. He needs to be up much higher. That is… I mean, the #11 ran into him, but the #54 needed to give him more space.”
Taking the hit early on in the race, Hamlin still managed to maintain track position and got as far ahead as P3, before a caution forced a restart in the final moments of the race. Ending his run with a damaged car at P5, it can only be left to one’s imagination what he could have done had it not been for the encounter with Joe Gibbs’ grandson.

20-year-old Ty Gibbs’ has been making his full-time debut in the Cup Series this season under Joe Gibbs’ banner. Ever since appearing on the scene, he has showcased his aggressive driving style and made quite a few enemies on the grid. Noah Gragson, Sam Mayer, and the list just goes on. While it would have been completely reckless on Ty’s part to force intentional contact with Denny Hamlin, he most probably did not mean for the accident to happen. Nevertheless, the extent of the crash ended the No. 54 car’s race early and thankfully, Denny was all too understanding. At least in his post-race interview.
As a reporter asked how much of a factor the contact with Ty played in the rest of the race, he said, “Well, the only thing, you know, it affected the 54. Took him out. But I was trying to get around the changer who was just finishing the right rear lug. When I swung out there to avoid hitting him, obviously we were three wide with the 54. So as you can see there’s not much room here on this pit lane it’s not very wide. And so, if you have one car coming out and a car too wide, you’re gonna have contact.”

With Denny Hamlin being the new controversy of NASCAR, he certainly isn’t someone the young Ty Gibbs would want to be on the wrong side of this early in his career. Hopefully, he will not stick to his character and try repaying Denny in the next race for what was a mistake of his own.
