The weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway gave us a saga of events that continues to expand. The race was filled with stoppages undergoing three red flags and an overtime extension as well. One of the highlights of the event was the heated tussle between Richard Childress’ grandson Austin Dillon and Team Penske driver Austin Cindric. The on-track altercation that happened in the 220th lap as they roughed each other up in turn 4, has led to Dillon throwing accusations.

He has been vocal about his displeasure regarding the incident and demanded suspension for Cindric. Other drivers from the grid have also shown interest in the controversy, one of them being Denny Hamlin.

Hamlin has shown a way for Cindric to retaliate on track without wrecking him previously. But in a strange spin of words, Hamlin has gone back on his words, it seems.

Yes! It Is Great for NASCAR

No, It Was a Disaster This Time

Hamlin has been on the receiving end of some flak for his comments last week on this incident. Suggesting the involved drivers just bump instead of wrecking the opposing driver, Hamlin’s latest viewpoint has left everyone surprised.

“I think that I mean you can’t ignore evidence, right? I mean that’s just crazy if someone’s going to have a race suspension you have to look at all the evidence,” said Hamlin, in the press conference ahead of Sanoma.

“I think that they have looked at SMT in the past, just not as public as it is right now, but I agree it was a very 50/50 thing and didn’t warrant a suspension. Probably not, even though it looked a little iffy to me,” said Hamlin, bringing up the uncertainty of the crash.

However, Hamlin’s comments last week gave the idea that he didn’t look at things like they were ’50/50′. Rather, he had a solution for Dillion to retaliate. He had said, “What are you doing? Like if you are mad at him, just go into the next corner and bump him into the back of him, like you don’t have to wreck him.”

This statement has earned him much hate after being involved in the wreck with Chase Elliott earlier himself. But what do you think could be the reason for him to go back on his words?

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver has shown special interest in this crash. Talking about the role of emotions taking over the driver because of an adrenaline rush, Hamlin said, “You know, because I just .. in my opinion, I looked at the whole scenario. Well, let’s go back three laps and figure out was he mad or was he not.”

“He definitely was mad, so it just made it to where well, then you got to look at intent right? is it premeditated or not? You know that matters.”

Hamlin then goes into the smaller details of NASCAR’s priority to intent on serving out punishments. “Oh, trust me, they like to get into intent. For sure. So that all matters, but in the end, they made the right call I think. “

“You know, I hadn’t looked at it until I was right there at the microphone and looking at it and it’s like what’s he doing turning left there?”

Hamlin then reiterates his opinion about the chances being 50/50 in that case saying, “But if you look, you know it was so 50/50. It really was and Austin came up a little bit so you could go either way with it. And I’m glad they hedged on the side of you know, not making a call when it’s that close.” This further points out that Denny’s stance on the incident involving Childress’ grandson has changed in a matter of days.

It seems all the options, in this case, are yet to explore yet. That remains to be seen what steps NASCAR will take to solve the controversy around the tussle between the Austins.
