The NASCAR scene is buzzing with intrigue and uncertainty as two key contract situations take center stage. Austin Hill’s contract extension with Richard Childress Racing sparks curiosity as it got unwarranted attention. On the other hand, Denny Hamlin, still without a contract beyond 2023, raises eyebrows. In this evolving motorsport drama, Hamlin’s insight provides a unique perspective on these contract mysteries.

The racing community witnessed Austin Hill’s commitment to RCR. With a multi-year deal, he has solidified his position as the driver of the No. 21 RCR Chevrolet Camaro. With six NASCAR Xfinity Series wins under his belt. Four of which were claimed this season, Hill’s prowess on the track is evident. As the Xfinity Series points leader and a standout performer, his decision to continue racing for RCR attracted both applause and intrigue. Especially when a certain Kaulig Racing figure expressed their surprise at the contract extension.

The NASCAR universe was set abuzz when Xfinity Series points leader Austin Hill inked a multi-year contract extension with RCR. The deal solidified Hill’s place with the team’s Xfinity program, offering a glimpse into the future of his racing journey. However, a curious turn of events followed as Chris Rice, Kaulig Racing’s President, retweeted Hill’s announcement with a cryptic “Wait what?” quote.

This tweet set off speculation about possible Cup Series contract talks between Austin Hill and Kaulig Racing.

In a recent episode of his podcast, Denny Hamlin discussed the Kaulig Racing situation with his co-host Jared Allen. “Austin Hill resigns with RCR,” said Hamlin.

“He says next year we will definitely be at Xfinity for sure… But one thing that popped up was Chris Rice saying, “Wait What?” And so it made me believe that… Did Austin Hill have talks going on with Kaulig about going to Cup with them and then all of a sudden, out of the blue Austin Hill announces he’s staying with RCR without notifying Kaulig? I don’t know, but it seemed like the folks at Kaulig were surprised by this announcement.”

“That’s how I saw that Austin Hill was resigning, thanks to Chris Rice’s tweet,” Jared mentioned. “But I didn’t know, I had to do a little digging, I did not know why Chris Rice had said that. I mean, I assume there were probably talks ongoing, but I had not heard of anything prior to that tweet.”

“I mean, it was a little bit in the rumor mail for sure that you know they [Kaulig Racing] were gonna make some changes over there and whatnot. But it certainly seemed like some of the parties were not notified before an announcement. You know, RCR knows what that’s all about,” Hamlin concluded with a sarcastic comment on RCR.

According to motorsport.com, Hamlin opened up about his contract situation in a post-qualifying interview at Watkins Glen.

When asked if he intends to return with Joe Gibbs. He said, “I intend to, for sure. It’s what I want. I think it’s what Joe [Gibbs] wants. I think there’s just a lot of factors out of mine and his hands. Again, if I didn’t own a team, I think it would be done by now. There’s just a lot of different factors that play into it as to whether we can get it done or not. All you can hope is this late in the season. Everyone is putting their best foot forward to compromise and come up with the right deal. That’s good for everyone.”

Refuting any similarities between his situation and that of Kyle Busch last year, he said. “I think I’m happy at Joe Gibbs Racing, and I think Joe is happy with me. I think the Kyle situation last year, Kyle’s ask was his ask and Joe Gibbs needed sufficient funding on the car to do it. It’s easy to draw parallels. I’m saying some things Kyle said. Joe is saying some similar things. But there’s just more factors in play than just us for sure.”
