There was a sense of doubt among the fans if Kyle Busch would be able to make his way up to the top again following his infamous exit from Joe Gibbs Racing after a long and fruitful partnership. However, the two-time Cup Series champ immediately shut his critics down by securing his first victory for Richard Childress Racing at the Auto Club 400 last Sunday. Moreover, Busch’s rivals and fellow drivers were not really surprised by his early success, including Chase Elliott, who finished second at Fontana. Recently, Rowdy’s former Joe Gibbs teammate Denny Hamlin shared Chase Elliott’s “surprise” take on Kyle Busch while putting RCR ahead of Hendrick Motorsports in terms of the engine department.
Denny Hamlin and co-host Jared Allen recently discussed Kyle Busch’s Fontana victory on the Actions Detrimental podcast. While agreeing with Elliott that Busch’s win was no surprise, Denny Hamlin commended the balance RCR has in terms of driving talent, car dependability, and engine capabilities.

In the recent iteration of the Actions Detrimental podcast, Allen asked Denny Hamlin if Busch surprised him by starting off so well with a new team. In response, the three-time Daytona 500 winner ended up ranking RCR over Hendrick Motorsports in terms of mechanical abilities.
Denny Hamlin stated, “Surprised? No! No, I mean if we talk to people within the sport, RCR has one of the best, probably. I’m gonna say probably the best engine in the series, over Hendrick. I mean it’s very, many, many times they go on a dyno. RCR is P1 like their engine department is, right?”
Further, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver felt that the Richard Childress Racing team had a perfect combination of resources that could help them win big this season. Hamlin said, “They’re on time so you mix a really good car with a good team and got a great engine and a great driver. Guess what? You’re gonna win. And that’s what they’re doing right now.”
