Kyle Petty has quite a compelling argument: Martinsville Speedway should be the designated cutoff race in every stage of the playoffs. Imagine the excitement if it appeared thrice during the playoffs! That’s because Martinsville consistently delivers on the promise of high-octane action, surpassing the buzz it generates. The recent cut-off race of the round of 8 was no exception, with the final laps encapsulating the very essence of racing exhilaration.

In the heated climax, Ryan Blaney and Denny Hamlin were locked in a duel for the top spot, leading to a slight brush from Hamlin’s vehicle. But in the world of racing, clarity is key. And, almost immediately after the incident, Hamlin took to the radio to clarify the situation, providing a firsthand account of the events that unfolded on the track, ensuring transparency and sportsmanship were upheld.

After facing a significant setback due to a mechanical glitch last week, Hamlin found himself on the brink of elimination at Martinsville. With sheer determination, he surged forward, taking the lead for an impressive 156 laps during Sunday’s race. His goal was evident when he communicated over the radio, “I’m not counting points. I’m doing everything I can to win. Everything!” right before the race’s final phase. However, the tide shifted post the last round of pit stops.

Both Hamlin and Blaney opted for four fresh tires, but this move saw Hamlin lose his advantageous position, leaving him struggling to navigate through the traffic and reclaim his lead. It’s worth noting that Martinsville has been a challenging track for Hamlin. Just a year ago, a last-minute audacious move by Ross Chastain dashed his championship hopes.

The race wasn’t without its controversies this time as well. A minor collision between Hamlin’s car and Ryan Blaney’s led to Blaney’s spotter accusing Hamlin of the contact. An exasperated Blaney retorted, “F*ck! That was uncalled for.” However, Hamlin was quick to set the record straight. He promptly radioed his team, asserting that he had no intention of causing any deliberate mishap. He explained, “F**king #12 tried to brake down the backstretch to keep me on the outside… Got the #24 by the f*ck. If he wants to play games, we can play games. I am the one who’s got nothing to lose.”

But Hamlin didn’t stop there. On his podcast, he further addressed the incident, challenging Blaney’s “misjudgment” justification.

Blaney’s car was undeniably in prime form, a major contributor to his victory. Even Hamlin, while giving his own car the title of “runner-up,” couldn’t resist a sly nod to Blaney’s clever maneuvers on the track.

Reflecting on their riveting duel, Hamlin explained that Blaney was playing cat and mouse with him, keeping the #11 pilot on his toes on the outside while he was vying for a spot inside. As Hamlin slowed to get into a better position, their cars came into contact because he wasn’t maintaining his pace. It seemed intentional. He also said that he remembers venting on the radio, questioning his tactics. It was truly a ‘come on’ moment.”

Hamlin further elaborated on what he believed was Blaney’s game plan. “That happened in that misjudgment because he was trying to play some games on the backstretch, which is all good. It was fine. It worked out, for sure. But it led to some really good battles for the next few laps of us going back and forth and crossing each other over, which is certainly the most exciting part of the race that we had.”
