The Cup Series finale at Daytona had everyone on the edge of their seats. However, the day’s biggest winner was 23XI Racing driver Bubba Wallace. After occupying the 16th and final spot on the points table for a long time, Bubba was hoping for a favorable outcome to help him achieve his goal of making it to the playoffs for the first time. As his fellow bubble battle drivers faltered at Daytona, Bubba brought great news for team owners Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin.

Hamlin has been an enormous supporter of Bubba’s pursuit of a playoff debut. And now, the Joe Gibbs Racing veteran has come up with the quintessential strategy for Bubba to follow, which could bolster his chances of making his experience of the playoffs memorable.

Having endured about two decades in the Cup Series, going toe-to-toe with some of the best drivers to grace the sport, Denny Hamlin has a fair idea of what the prerequisites are going into the playoffs. Being a new entry into the sequence of the playoffs that continues to cut out 4 drivers with every passing round, Bubba will undoubtedly feel the pressure in an unknown atmosphere.

That is precisely where Denny comes in. With a plethora of experience, he acts as a guiding light for the Alabama native. Explaining the elimination format of the playoffs on his podcast Actions Detrimental, Hamlin elaborates on what the next two months could be like.

“This is basically a three-race season that we’re about to have.” states the 42-year-old.

“We’re gonna cut off the bottom 4 then recede them based on the playoff points. If no one were to win a race, or win a stage in the playoffs, the points would then reset to these exact same numbers. So William Byron would go back to the top where he was, as long as he stays in the top 12. These next three weeks he’s gonna go back to the top with Martin Truex.”

William Byron has been the pick of the drivers this season, racking up 5 wins to his name and leading the playoff points standings. Denny’s teammate Martin Truex Jr., on the other hand, hasn’t been far behind, and one could even say that he has been more consistent than Byron throughout the season. Hamlin then continues the conversation, describing a situation that could land his driver, Tyler Reddick, in a position of bother.

“Now, they can earn more and add to their total that carries into each round but, this is just to say the bottom 4… these four guys are gone. Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, Tyler Reddick, and Brad Keselowski are now in the danger zone in the next round. Then, you gotta put yourself in the top 8 to make it to the next round. Then, once again, make it to the final four.”

As the podcast moves ahead, Denny then goes on to lay out the lines for Bubba to walk on to make his playoff run significantly better.

Denny has been a supportive team owner for his drivers, Reddick and Bubba, in every aspect. From keeping close tabs on their development to searching for the best possible facilities to avail themselves of for their crews, Denny Hamlin has led from the front.

As the team prepares for the next step in becoming a powerhouse in the sport, Denny lists the ultimate secret to moving up the playoff ladder. He says, “So each three, we’re cutting off four. So, at least, four drivers for the final race.”

“One thing you need to understand, though, it does not matter how many points you have if you win in a round, automatically going to the next round. So Bubba Wallace could be still 16th in points after two of these three races but if he wins that last playoff race, doesn’t matter what his points were. Bam, he goes into the next round. So basically, win and you’re in. Just win and you’re gonna find yourself in the next round of playoffs.”
