Fan reactions are unavoidable, especially when you are in the public eye. Denny Hamlin is no less of a celebrity in the world of NASCAR. With 50 NASCAR Cup Series races, 17 Xfinity Series wins and 2 Truck Series victories, the 43-year-old man has faced his fair share of controversies and fandom.

After his controversial win at the Pocono Raceway, the entire NASCAR community is hurling mean comments at the 23XI Racing co-owner. In a recent Instagram sneak peek, a mutual friend of the #11 and #5 drivers did something that was supposed to be funny. Unfortunately, it received hateful comments from hundreds of NASCAR enthusiasts.

Jared Allen (not the former NFL player), a mutual friend of both Hamlin and Larson, appeared in discussion with the former in Actions Detrimental. The episode was entirely about the recent tussle between the two. Although people have been calling Hamlin names since he drove the HMS Star into the wall, one particular act provoked the audience.

Jared wore a t-shirt that had Kyle Larson’s name written on one half, and the other half was the t-shirt that Hamlin himself was wearing in the studio that day. It was supposed to signify the fact that he was a friend to both NASCAR icons. But this act triggered the entire NASCAR community, which broke out into calling Hamlin names.

A fan wrote,“I wouldn’t even wear a half Hamlin shirt…at one time sure, but no more…”.

Who wants to hear @dennyhamlin and his next excuse?? Not me… He needs to be HUMBLED… He has become a Joke just like Ross has been the last 2/3 years… Had respect for this guy but after looking at his past year.?.?.? No, He needs to be HUMBLED…, wrote another.

One fan said “Hamlin is the whiner of the century. I can hardly wait for the time he gets pushed out of the groove just to hear him cry and complain so Joe Gibbs can give him a lollipop.”

While other reflected on Denny’s style of racing saying, “Denny races dirty… He continues to run people up the track…”

In the comments section of the video, people have even gotten personal and shamed Denny Hamlin in every way possible. Someone commented: “Denny physically abuses the mother of his children and constantly plays the victim…”

Amidst the negativity, one would wonder what the Toyota Camry driver has to say to all of that. In the post-race interview of the Highpoint.com 400 at Pocono Raceway, Hamlin had a rather interesting thing to say to his haters.

“Fandom is a crazy thing…” he said “I have noticed the further away they are, the more boos are, when they’re up close they are actually very nice, it’s so different, like walking out versus someone who is on the other side of the fence, it reminds me of social media, like the further you can get from face-to-face interaction, the more hateful you can become… they’re hateful to everyone!”

I don’t fault the fans for not liking me because there are people in sports that I don’t like… I’ve never met them. I root for the other team, so when they root for the other team, and the team doesn’t win, they think that I am responsible for that team not winning. You see the reactions that you do…” he further added.
