Is Denny Hamlin playing it smart by avoiding drama with Austin Dillon, or is he just scared?

The Richmond race ended in a controversy. That has evoked many reactions. Firstly, celebrations are underway at the Richard Childress Racing as Austin Dillon has gotten the team’s first win of the season. It’s shocking that the team which has two-time NASCAR champion Kyle Busch is being led by the #3 racer.

The win for Dillon did not come before he wrecked his way to victory. Joey Logano was sent from P1 to P19 and Denny Hamlin found himself in the wall. Both the racers were furious post the race, Logano more than Hamlin, as they were fighting for the crucial playoff points. It is a natural tendency to take an eye for an eye. However, in a recent podcast episode, NASCAR Insider, Freddie Kraft said both of them won’t seek revenge as they are smarter than that.

Would Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin seek revenge?

The win marked Dillon’s first since the 2022 season. His unexpected win has given him a spot in the playoffs. This moment did not come before the following events occurred. Dillon was leading the last few laps of the race when a caution happened and at the restart, Logano took the lead ahead of Dillon. For the #3, this would have felt like losing the only opportunity to get in the playoff. He rear-ended race leader Joey Logano in the final turn, sending the two-time champion spinning. Undeterred, Denny Hamlin launched a last-ditch effort for the win, but Dillon’s car made contact with Hamlin’s, throwing him on the outside wall to secure the victory in a contentious finish.

Logano was furious at Dillon’s move as was evident from his post-match interview. Where he said, “That’s chickens**t, there’s no doubt about it. He was four car-length back, not even close. Then he wrecks the 11 to go along with it. Then he goes up there…they got him praising and everything. But it’s a bunch of bullshit and not even freaking close.” When asked, how he would race the RCR driver in the future, Logano said, “Wait and see.” It’s clearly a warning for Dillon to watch out for him.

However NASCAR Insider thinks otherwise, as in the recent podcast episode of Door Bumper Clear, Kraft said, “I mean you’re not going to get into a pis**ng match with Austin Dylan because he can hurt you a hell of a lot more than you can hurt him.” If they try to wreck him, they might get wrecked themselves, get penalised and lose on the chance for a championship. As for Dillon, he has nothing to lose. He was 32nd in points before the race, far-far away from playoffs. Further in the conversation, Kraft said that it would only come down to revenge if Dillon, Hamlin and Logano race in the final four. Other than that it’s pointless for the two to fight Dillon. Reiterating this he said, “You’re not going to start a war with a guy that you don’t plan on racing the rest of the year and these two guys are way smarter than that.”

While It’s uncertain what Logano will do since he’s asked to wait and watch, Kraft might be right about Hamlin. Who was calmer after the incident. Hamlin said, “He’s got the win but obviously, he’s not gonna go far ’cause you gotta pay your dues back on stuff like that. But it’s worth it cause they jumped 20 positions in points, I understand all that, I get it, I just hate that I was part of it.” Even though these two won’t take any action. Isn’t that NASCAR’s job to do? NASCAR’s Elton Sawyer is still analysing the situation.

As of now, NASCAR has been pretty neutral on the topic. According to Sawyer, they are still looking into the incident. However, what is shocking is that NASCAR thinks that Dillon did not cross the line. On the incident, Sawyer said, “Historically that hasn’t been our DNA to take races away.” He went on to say, “Our sport has been a contact sport for a long time. You always hear, ‘Where’s the line, did someone cross the line?’ I would say the last lap was awful close to the line, we’ll take a look at all of the available resources from audio to video, listen to spotters, we’ll listen to crew chiefs and drivers and if anything rises to a level that we feel like we need to penalize then we’ll do that on Tuesday.”

On the matter, NASCAR driver Ryan Vargas took to social media to draw a parallel between Dillon’s controversial win and a similar incident from the 2010 Xfinity Series. In that incident, the driver at fault was fined $25,000, probation and a loss of 60 points. If this precedence is followed, it won’t be a severe penalty. As Logano was about to win, the points he would have gained could have aided in his journey to the top of the table getting in the fight for the coveted playoff points. NASCAR has to decide a fair penalty as if this continued to be passed, all drivers in P2 might start wrecking the ones in front of them. What, according to you is a fair penalty for the #3 driver? or is it all part of the game or should clean racing be a norm? Let us know in the comments below.
