Spire Motorsports recently acquired Live Fast Motorsports’ charter for the #78 car, shelling out a staggering $40 million for the deal. While this monumental transaction marks a new high in charter acquisitions in NASCAR, it also raises questions about the team’s alliances. Denny Hamlin, being one of the most prominent figures in the sport, has insinuated that Spire Motorsports acquiring a third charter may be part of a bigger deal that not everyone can see clearly from the outside.

Spire Motorsports’ purchase of Live Fast Motorsports’ charter has sent shockwaves through the NASCAR community. This $40 million deal has redefined the value of charters in the sport, highlighting the financial opportunities that teams are now pursuing. Spire’s earlier acquisition of the Furniture Row Racing charter for $6 million in 2018 now seems remarkably modest in comparison.

As a team owner himself, Denny Hamlin has closely followed this development. He speculates that this substantial investment could be more than meets the eye. While the headline reads as a single charter acquisition, Hamlin questions whether there’s a larger deal at play—potentially involving Gamebridge Group’s stake in multiple charters.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver offers insights into Spire Motorsports’ role within the NASCAR ecosystem. He notes that Spire has cultivated an alliance with Trackhouse Racing, which adds complexity to their affiliations. This alliance has prompted Hamlin to suggest that Spire could be functioning as a developmental or feeder team for larger teams like Hendrick Motorsports.

While Denny Hamlin raises these questions, it remains unclear whether Spire Motorsports’ intentions are solely based on bolstering their own team or if they are part of a more extensive deal within the industry. As Hamlin rightly points out, the devil is in the details, and the full extent of Spire’s ambitions may only be known to those deeply involved in the financial aspects of NASCAR.

During the recent episode of the Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin said, “Spire has an alliance with Trackhouse which is interesting. I thought they had an alliance with Hendrick, So it sounds like, Spire is just kinda being a farm AAA team and that’s probably downgrading them more than I should. But it’s like they are kind of a feeder for these bigger teams. Like I know their pit crews really come from Hendrick so a lot of their development guys, young guys, and pit crews that they develop start at Spire.”

“So this is obviously a big move you know by Spire to invest this in their team,” he added. “I guess the only question I have would be you know, did they spend $40 Million on a charter, or was this part of a deal with the Gamebridge group that allowed them to own a stake in all three charters... They just paid 40 for this one charter, which is, you know, BJ’s charter been ranked last for a couple of years now. Or is this part of a bigger deal that unless you’re in the know or NASCAR or somebody in the financials would know? Is this part of a bigger buy into Spire by Gamebridge Group? And so, it’d be interesting to know that for sure.”

Truck Series champion Zane Smith signed a multi-year contract with Trackhouse Racing earlier. “This just means the world to me,” He had said. “I almost didn’t have anything a couple of years ago. It was 365 days ago. I sat at Bob Evans with a very close friend and he asked me where I want to race one day. I think he expected maybe a different answer. But my answer was ‘Trackhouse’ and almost 365 days later I signed a contract with them.”

However, the twist is that he will be loaned to Spire Motorsports for a Cup Series ride in 2024. Smith’s journey to the Cup Series has been emotional, as he expressed during a recent press conference at Bristol Motor Speedway. He reflected on a time when he almost didn’t have a racing opportunity, and now, he’s living his dream by joining Trackhouse Racing.
