The case of Southside Speedway has garnered much attention recently. One of the prominent personalities leading the proceedings to make sure it returns to mainstream racing is Denny Hamlin. Denny is riding on the back of his success in the Cup Series to land some more good news. The venue in Chesterfield being his childhood home also plays a major role in piquing Denny’s interest in it. Supporting Hamlin’s dream is NASCAR legend and connoisseur Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Junior was the first driver to notice that Chesterfield officials were trying to revive the iconic track in Virginia. His major contribution to turning around the fortunes of a slowly decaying North Wilkesboro track paid off handsomely, with this year’s All-Star race proving to be a success. With the funds, this collaboration can provide, their emotions toward the track as drivers are what make the prospect of it so exciting.

In recent years, Hamlin’s reputation has begun to expand. From a stalwart of NASCAR to a team owner of 23XI Racing, who are emerging as dark horses this year, it has been one eventful journey for the 42-year-old. Now, since the opportunity presents itself, the #11 driver is ready to take on the next step of becoming a track owner. This will put him in a similar light as three-time Cup Series champion Tony Stewart, who has invested in the Eldora Million similarly.
Speaking to media personnel in an interview, Denny Hamlin revealed the plan of action was already being considered, and his priority is to take ownership of the venue. The 23XI co-owner disclosed, “I’ve met with the county and the state on that, probably earlier this year. My interest would be to own it.”

“I would love to run it, but I would love to own it if I were to run it. We’d have to work around that for sure. It sounds like the county does own it, but again, but if we’re going to put effort and time, I would like to have some kind of stake in the facility.”

If there’s one person in the community for whom the phrase ‘a man with a plan’ is apt, it is Dale Earnhardt Jr. Ever since his retirement, he has not looked back, and his influence has only kept growing further. Looking to capitalize on the opening that has formed in Chesterfield, Hamlin revealed how Junior’s presence bolsters his arsenal of motives.
“I told them we need x amount of money to own this track to upgrade it and make it super nice, Dale Jr. has told me he would bring CARS Tour there twice a year.” said Hamlin.

Track officials have also separated the bids for the commercial area from bids that come in to buy the track-dominant area. This approach has preserved the racing aspect of the popular speedway, which was not the case earlier. As of now, the track is owned by CEDA( Chesterfield Economic Development Authority), which also grabbed the space for $4.5 million in 2021. If not for ownership, Denny Hamlin also has plans to get himself some percentage of ownership.
“There are a lot of opportunities. That’s something the state and county would see interest from. It’s working a deal with the county to where I would have a stake in it, that’s the only thing. Then I would have to go to a developer, ask how much it costs, take that to the county. They had deadlines on those different proposals earlier this year and we were just waiting and see so it’s later days.”
