NASCAR returned to the legendary Bowman Gray Stadium after 54 long years. It was a moment for which fans had been waiting. However, soon, fury took over as the FOX network started to have major pitfalls with the broadcast quality. It led to a major backlash among fans who called out the zoomed-in picture as a major concern.
But it seems that it is not only the coverage or the angles that were a major issue. Denny Hamlin recently pointed out how gimmicky the cartoonish images on the leaderboard looked. The graphics package has always been a point of concern and FOX’s decision to go ahead with it for yet another year was taxing.

FOX has been on the radar since the start of the season, and it is certainly not for the right reasons. They have been using cartoon-style graphics for the racing broadcasts. However, this time, even Denny Hamlin is resonating with the fans and he is quite particular about how Fox has not updated his photo on the graphic board yet. NASCAR traditionally locks in a driver’s appearance from production day (typically around January 15th) for the entire season. This consequently means whatever hairstyle they have on that day is what appears in all official graphics, videos, and promotional materials.
For this year, the production day was in January, and by then, Hamlin had his look for the season set. He has also grown his hair given that last season, FOX showcased his buzzcut hair for the entire year round. However, to his utter dismay, even this year they have continued to keep the same image on the graphic board. Speaking of the same, the Joe Gibbs driver said, “I was so excited. Actually excited to go to the production day this year. Finally gonna lose The Buzzcut. Whatever you look like on January 15th is what you look like for the entire year. I had to live with a Buzz cut, the entire year……They haven’t changed it. Give me my hair back Fox. I gotta sports clip car, gotta show it off. And hurry up before it gets gray”.

Hamlin further added humorously that, since he drives a Sport Clips-sponsored car (a company known for haircuts), it’s even more important that his hair is properly showcased. The comment by Denny Hamlin on how FOX is working on a delayed schedule has made fans resonate with the same. Given that they are continuing with the cartoonish displays, fans have jumped on and criticized FOX widely.

It can be certainly frustrating to see a morphed image for the entire year long at the graphic board. For seasons now, fans have demanded that FOX should get away with the cartoons, but the media house has turned a deaf ear to all the pleas. Pointing out the same, a fan commented, “They could also just do away with the cartoons but we all know that aint happening.” Speaking of the humorous element they add to the entire show, another fan commented, “Fox’s Graphics Are Definitely something 💀.”
Each of us knows that getting static images of drivers that resonate and represent them is not that difficult. Hinting at the same, a fan posted, “If only there was a way to get an accurate image of a person. Say, I don’t know, freezing an image of the individual? Maybe call it a ‘picture’? That would be cool.” It is quite a given that cartoon drawings and images are not exactly similar. Drawings usually have a higher possibility of mistakes which could make a person look different. Suggesting FOX to use actual images, a fan commented, “How about we ditch the drawings and go with actual driver photos”.

For years, it has become the norm for FOX to use cartoon images and fans are indeed frustrated with what they are seeing. Expressing the same, another fan commented, “Just get rid of the cartoons all together, NO ONE WANTS THEM.” With fans growing increasingly vocal about their frustration, it’s clear that FOX’s insistence on cartoon graphics is more of an eyesore than an enhancement. This move by FOX has left many to wonder if the network will ever listen or if they’re just stuck in their ways.
