While big-shot drivers like Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman missed this year’s driver’s championship playoffs, Denny Hamlin‘s Cup Series team was able to get both their cars into the playoff rumble. Although none of them got the win on Sunday at Darlington, both made commendable finishes, with one of them being a top 3. But Bubba Wallace‘s boss felt like the 29-year-old could have done more than a 7th-place finish.

Darington was Bubba Wallace’s first playoff race. This year, a majority of the seasonal races witnessed Bubba’s misery in the hands of his pit crew. Although when Chris Buescher finished first at Daytona, Wallace heaved a sigh of relief at being able to clench the final spot in the playoffs. But two on-track incidents prevented the sweet ending for what seemed to be a ‘good day’ for the 23XI driver.

Despite having good speed, Bubba Wallace faced a slow pit stop. Nevertheless, he recovered from it and also from a spin, right in the opening laps of Stage 1 and aced a respectable finish. As a result, he will head to Kansas 13th in driver’s standings and just one point below the cutline.

However, last year, Bubba won in Kansas. So, fans would not be wrong to expect a spectacular show from the 29-year-old.

But if we come back to talking about this past Sunday’s race, and the missed opportunities, something really concerned Denny Hamlin, and it was not Wallace’s finish.

As a recent episode of Actions Detrimental rolled out, Denny exclaimed, “Bubba had a really good day, but he didn’t score any stage points.” For him, it seemed like a surprise, as Bubba had been scoring significant stage points in the last couple of races in the season. Hamlin added, “He is still minus 1, he actually gained on the cutline but I don’t think there is any surprises other than (that).” Surprisingly, when asked, Bubba let slip what went wrong at Darington. And it seems it was his fault.

The first incident occurred with AJ Allmendinger on the opening lap of the race. Moreover, in the ultimate lap of Stage 1, Bubba Wallace ran around turn 4 and straight into the right rear wheel of Joey Logano’s number 22 Ford.

Bubba Wallace admitted that he did not do the things that he needed to do. He called his move with Allmendinger “just bonehead.” He stated, “Freddie (Kraft) called me clear well before I pulled up to take the line away. Got lazy there and then with the 22…I figured we were racing in the corner so I surrendered him…I just lost it.”

Bubba felt like he was not trying enough to save himself from the contact. “I guess I should have tried to get too much; maybe I would have saved. I don’t know…” he added with a voice full of remorse.

Bubba was quite apologetic to his team and everybody else involved in the skirmish. But the team player in him declared, “…we rebounded so that’s what you got to show; the resilience, the setbacks… you got to keep going. Appreciate the team for carrying me today.”
