Alex Bowman was sitting pretty in third place during the final stage when in Turn 3, his #48 Chevy spun out, triggering a restart. Passing by Kyle Larson on the inside during the restart, Hamlin pushed him toward the outer wall in Turn 1, causing the #5 Chevy to slam sideways into the SAFER barrier. In the meantime, Justin Haley’s crash triggered the yellow flags to be brought. Under caution, Larson expressed his displeasure with Hamlin’s actions by driving into the #11 car’s driver-side panel. Still holding on to his lead, Hamlin flew under the checkered flag in the first place, collecting the Pocono race win.

Arriving at Pocono’s Victory Lane, Denny Hamlin justified his in-race actions, saying, “Both guys wrecked themselves. There was a lane. He missed the corner first and evidently he didn’t have his right-side tires clean and when he gassed it up he kept going again. You have an option in those positions to either hold it wide open and hit the fence or lift and race it out. But those are choices they made. I didn’t hit either one of them. I didn’t touch them.”
Upon hearing Hamlin’s words, the already-unimpressed Pocono crowd responded with loud boos directed at the #11 Joe Gibbs Racing driver. Further riling up the already vexed crowd, Denny Hamlin added, “I love it! They can boo my rock out of here in a few years!”
