NASCAR is known for its unique personalities of drivers. There are those that keep their heads down and go about their business. And then there’s a few like Denny Hamlin. Few because nobody does it like him these days. Conflict and friction between the drivers are understandable, but to paint yourself as a villain for most of the fans takes some doing. The boos for Hamlin at Pocono and Bristol showed the fan’s displeasure with the driver, but he certainly likes to wear the villain hat.

The true essence of his character and personality, both on and off the racetrack, were on display in depth in Netflix’s docuseries, Full-Speed. It promises to be a raw portrayal of the driver’s persona and upon its realise, Hamlin feels like Netflix did justice in depicting his version of it. Even went as far as to say that his on-track, ‘Brash and Cocky’ identity was painted accurately in the series.

Although people might have a different opinion of Hamlin’s antics on the track and his personality, he does come up with the results for his team. 50 NASCAR Cup wins count for something, right? This was backed by his showing in the 2023 season, where he picked up three wins and could’ve even got a better shot at the championship challenge if not for his niggling shoulder injury.

The Joe Gibbs Racing’s No.11 has been vocal about how he likes to feed off the fan’s boos and flack on the racetrack despite a win. ‘I beat your favorite driver’ was a jibe very few NASCAR drives would not even dream of pulling off, but he did. He has sort of donned the role of antagonist of NASCAR and he is all for it. He even gave his approval to Netflix for painting him the villain of NASCAR that he has grown to be.

Speaking to Bob Pockrass in an interview, Hamlin said, “I feel like it portrays me correctly. You really kind of worry at times that you don’t have editing rights, you don’t have any of that. I loved it you know, this is Netflix’s project, right? They got to do whatever they wanted to do with it. I thought what I’m on the race track, what I’m off the racetracks was portrayed correctly.”

While Hamlin is chasing the elusive Cup Series championship, his age is certainly catching up to him acting as a hindrance in his pursuits.

#5 was the final place for JGR’s No.11 on the overall points standing despite the impressive regular season stints. There are factors such as luck, caution, and accidents that can weigh into the outcome of a championship, but for Hamlin, it was the niggling shoulder injury. Having patched up his left shoulder earlier in his career, during the 2023 race at Las Vegas, he suffered a horror injury to his right shoulder, pulling off his tendons. Unaware of the damage done, he kept on racing, which made things even worse for him later in the season.

After the season concluded, the 43-year-old underwent surgery to fix his shoulder, and it is expected to take some time for him to be at 100%. Providing an update on his recovery path during a recent interview, he said, “It’s been really hard, there’s really no shortcuts to get this thing better. They told me it was going to be three months and there’s no shortcuts around it, so three months till I get back to hundred percent. Certainly, I feel better than I did at the end of the season. We’ll work our way to the Clash and then get stronger and go on from there.”
