87-year-old Richard Petty is a seven-time champion on the tracks but has an even bigger passion off the tracks. With 127 pole positions, 200 Cup wins, and the highest number of wins in a single season (27), the list of achievements goes on and on. However, this pales in comparison to his off-court desires. Recently the ‘King’ took to X to share his love for one of the most classic snacks: Popcorn!

Every word of his post is crystal clear, the sight of a big popcorn bag in his hand and the sense of satisfaction in every bite relished the legend while flying. The popcorn bag in his hand already seemed half-consumed. This admission led X user ‘nascarman_rr‘ to share an interview from 1991 where Petty goes into detail about his love affair with popcorn.
Interviewers questioned him about the amount of popcorn he had eaten over the years. He answered, “I don’t know how much. It might be tons. It’s a bunch, that’s all I know.” That’s pretty obvious, when you dig in, you don’t count how much you’re digging unless you hate doing it. But here’s a different case, he also stated back then, “We used to have a popcorn popper at the house and we used it all the time.” “But we’ve gone modern now. We use microwave popcorn. We use the buttered popcorn and, man, that’s good stuff!” Richard Petty’s preference for cars might be old-fashioned but he kept up with the times when it came to making popcorn.
He further shared what went down when a company sent him a big rig of popcorn. “That thing was full of popcorn, I mean slam full. They left us the whole truckload. There was enough there to last most folks a lifetime, but I told them the way popcorn was eaten around my house, it would be plain luck if the load lasted even a year.” Few things are meant to be shared, and sharing the same taste preference is best for every family. Richard Petty and his family’s attitude toward popcorn is something you can always count on.

In that interactive interview that was published on ‘The Personal Side’, Petty continued, “When we go to the movies, I don’t bother buying a bag or box of popcorn. Forget that, I get one of them barrels, know what I mean? That will just about do me for one movie.” Best straightforward thoughts, and no hesitation in what he craves the most. It’s always good when one gets to know their star better. This National Popcorn Day post has revived the old and prime-time memories of the 7 time NASCAR Cup Series Champion. His achievements in the past were iconic and his love for popcorn is clearly well documented, however, what is he up to these days?

Richard Petty donated 403 acres of land to the Victory Junction Camp for children who need medical attention for chronic illnesses. The foundation was started by his son, Kyle Petty, to honor Adam Petty, Kyle’s son, after his tragic death at the New Hampshire Speedway during a practice run in 2000. Helping out children in need was always Adam’s dream and in 2004 they started the camp to bring it to fruition. Petty donated land as part of the 20th anniversary of the fund.
Speaking on his donation, Richard Petty said, “My family and I are dedicated to leaving a legacy. By donating an additional 403 acres, we hope to ensure the camp can continue serving even more children for generations to come.” He is also a founder and active board member in the Victory Junction in 2024. The ‘King’ will always reign supreme. Whether it be for his racing legacy, his love for popcorn, or his contributions to the community.
