In the world of NASCAR, where a wrong pit stop can mean the difference between victory and defeat, the relationship between the driver and their crew chief reigns supreme. The driver is just a piece of the puzzle. Without a crew chief’s strategy, they cannot pilot the roaring machine around the track as efficiently. And for William Byron and Rudy Fugle, it didn’t take many races to showcase their chemistry, as they won in the third race of the 2021 season at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Even in 2016, with William Byron at just eighteen, the duo had won seven NASCAR Truck Series. If this teamwork doesn’t have the owner of Hendrick Motorsports, Rick Hendrick, believing in winning all the championships to come, then what would? Nothing is probably a pipe dream when it comes to a duo like Rudy Fugle and William Byron!

William Byron emerged as the victor of the Daytona 500, kicking off 2024 with a win. Discussing this with the NASCAR Live Podcast, Rick Hendrick spoke confidently about the duo. When asked if he believes that the duo of Rudy Fugle and William Byron will join the ranks of great pairings in the history of Hendrick Motorsports, such as Chad Knaus and Jimmie Johnson or Kyle Larson and Cliff Daniels, he responded, “I think it absolutely can“.
He further added, “I think when I go back and look at Ray (Evernham) and Jeff (Gordon), how they came up together. And Jimmie and Chad and all of those relationship. But Rudy. Gives way of the confidence that William needed. With having the guy that he was so close to in the truck series and that they understood each other“.
Rick further conveyed that William holds Rudy in high regard and emphasized their exceptional synergy. He remarked, “I think it’s going to be as good as anyone we’ve ever had“.
Now, there are no doubts as to why Rick Hendrick believes William Byron could follow in the footsteps of Jimmie Johnson. Since the inception of Hendrick Motorsports in 1984, Hendrick has witnessed numerous driver-crew chief pairings that have captivated the NASCAR community. Over the years, he has undoubtedly honed his ability to discern potential greatness within these partnerships.

Perhaps, for the first time, the inclement weather played playful tricks by postponing the Daytona 500 from Sunday to Monday, which also happened to be the 40th anniversary of the team’s first start in the NASCAR Cup Series. This triumph at the Daytona 500 marked a significant milestone for Hendrick Motorsports, securing their ninth victory in “The Great American Race”, solidifying their position among the most successful teams in NASCAR Cup Series history, tying for the highest number of wins.
Moreover, this victory holds added significance as it represents Hendrick Motorsports’ first win in the Daytona 500 since 2014. Earnhardt achieved that victory, marking his second triumph in the renowned contest.
“When I think back 40 years and coming down here and feeling like I didn’t belong, seeing Junior Johnson and the Pettys and Wood Brothers, and man, here we were with five full-time people and no sponsor, and finished in the top 10,” Hendrick said during a post-race press conference. “I’m in awe of how hard it is to win this race. I’m just so happy for William and Rudy and the organization and to see Alex finish second. That was great.”
