In May 2023, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton, and Justin Marks announced that they had purchased the CARS Tour. The new ownership group has said that they plan to make the CARS Tour the premier short-track racing series in the United States and also a great place for young drivers to develop their skills and prepare for a career in NASCAR. The CARS Tour has become more popular over the years, with huge success. And the new owners want more popularity, so they hired Kip Childress as their new executive director in July.

Childress is a third-generation official who has spent the past 14 years with NASCAR in various roles in its regional touring series, the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and most recently the NASCAR Cup Series as the assistant director.

In his new role as Executive Director of the CARS Tour, Childress will be responsible for overseeing the overall operations of the series, including marketing, sponsorship, and event management. He is also responsible for growing the series and making it the premier short-track racing series in the United States.

Childress is a well-respected figure in the racing industry, and he is known for his professionalism and dedication. In a recent episode of the “Door Bumper Clear” podcast, Kip Childress was asked about how he felt about leaving NASCAR after 15 years. He expressed that he was happy with his work at NASCAR, but he also believed that “Any opportunity comes in a way to take a look at it.”

He continued regarding the CARS tour, “When the opportunity cross my desk and had a few conversations with Dale and Kevin and Jeff and Justin and it was like Alright man just check all the right boxes I was able to say Yes to this all the right reasons.”

“For me personally and for my family, you know there will be opportunities to be home off weekends now a whole more than I have been over the past 15 years and but I look at this an opportunity to from a professional standpoint, get involved with the series that has done great things upto this point with helping young racers, big racers.”

Childress was an Official in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East (2005–2008), and he also mentioned how successful drivers are in the Cup Series coming from the K&N series. Notably, this list includes Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, William Byron, Joey Logano, Truex Jr., and many more.

“So I am looking for that opportunity it was the same feeling that I had at the K&N level when we were doing that right, look at how many of the drivers now that are in the Cup series that were racing in K&N Series at that time. It’s pretty damn impressive right and to know that we had an opportunity to be a small part of that.” Childress concluded.
