It had only been a few days since Tony Stewart and his team faced relentless pressure from fans, urging them to “give up” NASCAR due to their underwhelming performance on the track. However, last weekend’s race at Martinsville demonstrated a stark contrast, as Stewart-Haas Racing brought their A-game, impressively navigating the field.
Fellow competitor and team owner, Denny Hamlin, weighed in on this newfound glimmer of hope for Stewart’s team, offering a cleverly veiled jibe mixed with a hint of optimism.
Denny Hamlin gives his take on SHR at Martinsville
During a recent episode of his ‘Actions Detrimental’ podcast, Hamlin stated, “Yeah shout out to Stewart Haas. They had a great showing and they’ve not had a whole lot of theirs.”
“They’ve struggled for a while, you know getting all their cars to run fast. But it seems like when they do like they all run in the top 10. Like, it’s weird that maybe they just hit on a setup or something like that on some oddball weekends.”
The 23XI Racing Co-owner added, “But like they listen, they’re, they’re not afraid to run 15 to 28, you know, for a few weeks and then all of a sudden they show up in Martinsville.”
“It’s like, oh, gosh, they’re all you know, probably the top five fastest cars.”
“So yeah, they hit on something that was super good for them. And when I was racing around them, they were pretty dialed in,” Hamlin concluded.

While the race was underway, things looked great for SHR. However, despite them leading for half the race, things changed dramatically by the time the chequered flag was waved.
Ryan Preece went on to dominate the first 135 laps in Sunday’s competition. Furthermore, Chase Briscoe set a personal best by leading 109 laps around the 0.526-mile track. Even Kevin Harvick controlled the race for 20 laps. Meanwhile, experienced driver Aric Almirola secured the event’s top average running position at 4.76, narrowly edging out Briscoe by 0.01.
However, when the race concluded, Briscoe emerged as the sole SHR driver to secure a top-five spot. Almirola came in at sixth place. Preece and Harvick did not fare and finished 15th and 20th, respectively.

Judging by the raw pace out on the track, it surely seemed like they had one of the fastest cars out there. However, the final results did not echo the same sentiment. Despite how it turned out, hopefully, they would be able to carry this pace forward as we head down to Talladega this weekend.
