Danica Patrick has been one of the most influential women in the world of sports. 5 years after hanging up her boots, the colors of her career don’t reflect the same anymore. Days after getting embroiled in deep controversy for insensitive comments concerning the Late Shelley Pollex, Martin Truex Jr‘s former girlfriend, Danica has now issued a message about “delayed gratification”.

After five full-time seasons in the Cup Series under the banner of Stewart-Haas Racing, Danica Patrick had chosen to push her career towards being a social media personality and an entrepreneur. Currently serving Sky News as a host and podcaster, all was well until she chose to ignore the intricacies of dealing with sensitive issues being a celebrity who is looked up to by many.

Martin Truex Jr.’s girlfriend of 20 years, Sherry Pollex had battled ovarian cancer and passed away on September 19. A heartbroken Martin had made a statement that honored Sherry and expressed his condolences for her family. In response to this, Danica had expressed her displeasure claiming that the driver’s message was “as cold as it gets”. Given the abruptness and timing of her response, the NASCAR community had taken serious offense to her insensitiveness at a trying time.

While the wrath of fans hasn’t garnered a direct response from her yet, she did get on her Instagram once again to share a quote from New York Times Best Seller Lewis Howes about making sacrifices to get what you want out of life. The quote in her story read, “If you are serious about growth, be serious about accountability. If you are serious about abundance, be serious about gratitude. If you are serious about intimacy, be serious about vulnerability. If you are serious about discipline, be serious about delayed gratification.”

When a loved one passes away, it is not everyone’s cup of tea to find the perfect words to say. Being a celebrity only pushes that button deeper. But regardless of that, they are cornered to issue a statement for fans and the public. As Martin Truex Jr. was unfortunately put in a similar state, he issued a thoughtful statement that said out loud the type of person Sherry was. 

An excerpt from it was, “Sherry’s passion for making a difference in the lives of others was inspiring to everyone. Through her tireless charity work for so many years, her legacy will live well beyond our lifetimes (…). I would like to extend my deepest condolences to her entire family, who have shown incredible strength and resilience throughout her battle.”

It was these words that made Danica take a dig at the Joe Gibbs Racing driver. Going to an unwarranted extreme, she wrote on her Instagram story, “I avoid negativity at almost all costs. But this is the most insensitive disconnected statement from a guy that I have never liked. And obviously for good reason. I don’t care what happened between them but this is as cold as it gets. A PR rep wrote this guaranteed. You’re free from this now Sherry.”

The fire that her response built hasn’t died down as fans continue to bear upon Danica. Her recent story in such a time might not exactly be met with positivity. But regardless of the continuing drama, Essentially Sports wants to express its condolences to Martin Truex Jr., Sherry’s family and her friends.
