Is Daniel Suarez's compromise with Trackhouse Racing a recipe for disaster or a chance for redemption?

The NASCAR community had speculated that Trackhouse Racing’s Daniel Suárez is on the hot seat. However, all the speculations were put to rest as Trackhouse Racing recently signed a new contract with Suarez for the 2025 season. The team in their statement wrote,” Everyone at Trackhouse Racing is pleased to continue the relationship with Daniel and Freeway Insurance. Daniel has been vital to this team and its culture since the first day. Freeway joined that same year and we have all continued to grow together and will continue into 2025.”

Now, the question is, if Daniel is such a vital part of the team, why has he not been offered a multi-year contract? According to Daniel himself, not signing a year-long contract was a mutual decision. Something just doesn’t add up as the developments seem uncertain for #99 at Trackhouse Racing. While Daniel Suarez has been part of the track house team since its debut in the NASCAR Cup Series, yet, his seat seems unconfirmed in the team. Recently, Suarez only signed a year-long contract. Nothing is confirmed yet, and it might be because of his poor stats in the series.

What does Daniel Suarez’s future in the Trackhouse team look like?

Daniel Suarez secured a win at Atlanta and has a playoff spot. But other than that, his performance has been average in the 2024 season. He’s currently 16th in ranking and has only two top 5s and five top 10 finishes, with an average finish of 17.826. Other than the 2024 win, he only has one other win in the Cup Series, which came in the 2022 season. After signing the contract, Suarez in a statement talked about how both sides (him and track house) are still figuring things out. He said, “There is a lot of things in Trackhouse that are adjusting and changing. Performance-wise, we’re not exactly where we want to be — not just in the 99 but in Trackhouse as a company, and we have to make sure that we fix that before we want to go any longer. This goes really both ways.”

The fixing things point that Suarez here is talking about is probably referring to his stats, making it a possible reason for him getting only a year-long contract. It also shows that Trackhouse is not very confident in Suarez’s future. Another challenge Suarez is facing at the team is holding on to his seat as there are too many drivers eyeing it. Recently, NASCAR analyst Eric Estepp covered the same point, when he said, “They have five drivers under contract as of right now and they only have two Cup Series seats likely three if they get a third Charter which we all expect them to. but still, that’s going to lead to an uncomfortable game of musical chairs.” Along with Daniel Suarez and Ross Chastain, the team also has Shane Van Gisbergen, Zane Smith and last the prodigy Connor Zilisch. Who wouldn’t want a Cup series seat?

If Daniel fails to perform in the 2025 season, anyone out of them could be put in the #99 seat. Then what would the Mexican-American driver do? It’s not like teams are lining up for him. It is important to note that Suarez has had tremendous success in the Xfinity Series but has struggled in the Cup. He’s got the potential but is lacking the numbers to back it. But if he was to go, who would replace him? Maybe the fast-progressing Connor Zilisch?

Estepp further in his analysis talked about the options for the #99 car. He said, “If Zane Smith leaves for the front row which some speculate is very likely there is still going to be an odd man out within the next couple of years. assuming Conor Zilisch continues to develop at the rapid Pace he has been.” For the track house’s developmental driver, the 2025 season would really be a test. He’s been signed for 2025 to run in the Xfinity Series with Dale Earnhardt Jr’s JR Motorsports; now, his performance in the Xfinity Series will determine his Cup chances.

The current trajectory that Connor Zilisch’s been on predicts bright things for him in the future. As of now, his short NASCAR run has been extremely successful. Who can forget his Truck Series debut, where in the qualification he took the pole position in the 2024 Circuit of the Americas? Zilisch finished that race in the 4th position. That was incredible, given he wasn’t even 18 years old back then, and also enough for JR Motorsports to bring him up into the Xfinity series.

The credit for bringing such talent to NASCAR goes to Justin Marks for signing him in the early part of 2024. Hopefully, he performs well in the Xfinity series in 2025 and we get to see him in the Cup in the 2026 season. Do you think Daniel needs to watch out for him? Share in the comments below.
