King of dirt car racing no more
Don Klein first climbed behind the wheel of a stock car in 1955 and has 558 wins. He also has numerous dash and heat race wins to his name. As per Ken Schrader, ‘Dandy’s ‘wife, Blanche Klien, is the reason behind the wins. He met her on a market street, honked, waved at her, and asked her for a date. The rest is history. The driver passed away at the age of 86, leaving behind generations of race fans with his rich legacy of 55 years.

The Kenny Wallace Show’s handle on X shared, “RIP to legendary St. Louis racer “Dandy” Don Klein, who passed away today at the age of 86.” Wallace last visited him two years ago in St Genevieve, Missouri, home to the great racer.

The King of Dirt Track racing drove the number 28 for STL. STL Auto Racing FC shared on X, “Our condolences to the family. He was a legend, champion, hero, and one of the greatest racers ever. Thanks for the memories, thrills, and entertainment for generations of race fans! Race in peace.”
St Louis Motor Racing News is a forum that posted a tribute to Don ahead of the 2004 season. The article spoke about how Don was instrumental in teaching numerous young racers the ins and outs of making their cars faster over the years. Experienced racers like Ed Dixon benefited greatly from Don’s knowledge. Meanwhile, then emerging talents like Paul Bauman continue to gain important insights from him. Don was supported by several sponsors that helped him stay on the track, including Menard Dodge-Jeep, Jack Schmidt Ford, Napa Auto Parts, Valvoline, Otis Motorsports, Top Priority Roofing, Pop-A-Top Lounge, Auto Crafters, Glass Plus, Berry Machine & Welding, and High Caliber Graphics.
Twenty years on from that piece, one can only imagine the lasting impact he left on the community with his contributions since then. Fans on Facebook poured in with their condolences and fond memories of Don Klein during his time on the track.

Since the announcement of Don Klein’s passing away, fans have been pouring their love and condolences. One fan, Michele Brodtrick Young, said, reminiscing the past and how the man was a class act, “The years and years as a kid watching Donnie and my dad, Rich Brodtrick, race. Then there was going to the restaurant outside Belleville. All I remember is he would help me convince Mom and Dad to get the delicacy known as chocolate milk! I so appreciate him coming up to the hospital to see Dad as his time was approaching. It meant so much to our family.”
More people shared their favorite memories, especially those watching him every Friday with their grandparents. One reminisced about watching his match with his grandpa: “There was never a time when he didn’t make time to sign my arm and let me sit in his car. There definitely is a hell of a party going on up there!” He was a King at racing and of the hearts of his fans.
One called him “A great guy,” and said, “I have lots of memories of him at Belleville. After the night of racing, my dad and I would head to the pits and talk with Don; he always had time to speak with us and always made us feel welcome. As a little kid, I was in heaven.” As per the video shared by Kenny Wallace of his visit to Klein’s shop, the car he drove is well preserved. And so are the racer’s memories, as seen in lovely tributes from his fans.
